OT: grep by sound and grep by image
by Hiisi
Hi, list!
Sorry if this thread interrupts the hottest discussions about gnome3
and systemd. I'm just curious.
There's a visgrep utility [1] that allows one to find images inside of
images. I wonder is there anything similar to google image search
where one could provide a pattern image and search for similar images
(i.e. not the exact occurrences of the pattern, but similar to it with
a desired accuracy)? Anything of the sort for sound patterns?
It doesn't seem like a pure fantasy. The program might analyse some
kind of spectrum of the pattern and compare it to its database. The
latter could be updated once per week or manually (by calling
updateimgdb script).
Any thoughts?

Disable GDM "ready" sound
by Konstantin Svist
Every time I boot my laptop, I'm greeted with an annoying "BONG!" sound
(/usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/bell.oga)
Is there a "proper" way to turn it off? If not, I'll have to remove the
file..

Re: iMac on my Lan can't see my printer connected via usb to my linux box [SOLVED]
by Jackson Byers
the advice from Ted Roche worked:
I finally figured out I had to run that command from the iMac,
not from f14box:
on the iMac I ran
cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups
then after futzing with the
iMac Print & Fax preference pane in the System Preferences window.
I can finally see my f14 printer from the iMac.
and printing from the iMac works.
All of this days of pain
because of that change in OS-X.
Save me from future OS-X changes.
Thanks again to Ted Roche and this list!

Ted Roche responded
(http://localhost:631/help/sharing.html?TOPIC=Getting+Started&QUERY=#AUTO_...)
and there I found a note that says:
"Note:

> printers will not automatically appear in the print dialog. Instead,
> you must first run the following command to enable CUPS browsing on

Ted, thanks for the link
It reads as if it might be what I need.
But, much is not clear to me,
I thought the whole point of IPP Sharing was that
you didnt have to do anything on the client machines, even Macs.
Am I supposed to run
cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups
on my f14 box Server?
or on the imac client?
I tried "cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups" on my f14
no change, still cant see the printer from my imac
I also don't understand
" then choose each of the CUPS shared printers you want to see in
the print dialog by adding them, either from the Add Printer... item
in the print dialog or from the Print & Fax preference pane in the
System Preferences window"
is this meant to be done on my f14 server? or the imac client?
On my f14 I don't see a " Print & Fax preference pane in the
System Preferences window"
If it means choosing from the imac print dialog,
it seems impossible
because my entire problem is my imac cant see the printer to choose it.
I haven't felt this dumb re linux in a long time.

Vote to extend F14 security updates
by Robert Arkiletian
I run Fedora in school computer lab. I cannot upgrade to F15 because
of gnome3. In order to help the community stay with Fedora, could
security updates for F14 be provided until F17 is released?
Hopefully by then gnome3 will be fully baked.

Latest update boots to blank screen (nvidia)
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I have an IBM Thinkpad with an Nvidia card ( nVidia Corporation GT218
[NVS 3100M] (rev a2) )
I currently have the nouveau driver black listed in my grub.conf setup:
/rhgb quiet nouveau.modeset=0 rdblacklist=nouveau/
I did the update which installed/updated the following:
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-headers.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be updated
---> Package kmod-nvidia.i686 1:280.13-2.fc14 set to be updated
However when I reboot the system boots to a blank screen, and even the
previous kernel boots to a blank screen.
I tried installing akmod-nvidia but get the same results
I've restored the system back to before the update for now...
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

reaching a server behind a NAT
by Christopher Svanefalk
Hey all,
sorry if this is not purely Fedora related, but I was hoping I might get
some feedback anyhow from someone who knows more than I do.
I have this:
A NAT-configured router between my house and the internet.
A NAS behind the router.
A dyndns account, set up and pointing to the global address of the router.
I want to be able to reach the NAS from the internet. However, trying to
do so (including attempts to bind to specific ports on the NAS) simply
do not work, and I cannot tell why.
I have set up the router to port-forward the correct portcalls to the
NAS, but that does not solve anything.
So I am stuck, any tips?
Best,
Chris
