Mutter rendering horribly laggy
by Christopher Svanefalk
Dear all,
I run Fedora 17 on a desktop with an i7 3930K and a Radeon HD 6570 (using
the default, open source drivers packaged with Fedora). My DE is Gnome3.
I have noticed that going into Expose (for lack of a better word) mode -
where all open windows on a workspace get tiled up and you get to see the
additional menus - renders very poorly. It is jumpy, laggy, slow, and
nowhere near as smooth as the similar feature on OSX. This puzzles me,
since this hardware should be capable of such simplistic rendering without
much trouble...Is there any way to tweak mutter performance in this regard?

Not swap. If you really need swap, it gets written to over and over,
which isn't exactly the best thing for an SSD.
Indeed.
That is how I destroyed my first sdd.
First it worked flawlessly, but after about 6 months bad block started to appear on the ssd.
Swap is something like the safety-lane on the motorway, one shouldn´t need to use it too often, but it should be there because otherwise OOM kicks in with unpredictable results.
If you have enough mem, try moving things like /var/run, /tmp and /var/tmp to tmpfs: no need for them on ssd

Missing Something.....
by EGO-II.1
Hello All,
I'm trying to find out how to "fix" an isue with my laptop. Every time I
start it up and after logging in, I get an error message telling me that
"telepathy-butterfly" has either crashed or else there's some problem
with it. I've searched and searched, and all I can find is a link
leading to Bugzilla. My question is this, how do I find out the solution
to this problem? I've read all the info on the Bugzilla site but it just
lists a lot fo information that I don't know how to use. versions of
software, and these things called "backtraces"...I know it's only a
minor issue compared to those who are losing their data because of
faulty hard drives or something, but its just an annoyance I really wish
I could solve without having to get too technically involved Can anyone
help me out?...
Here's a copy of the actual error message I'm constantly getting upon
start up:
[abrt] telepathy-butterfly-0.5.15-3.fc15:
aliasing.py:144:_contact_alias_changed:AttributeError: 'Profile' object
has no attribute 'infos'

gdm lacks language & kbd layout selection
by Franta Hanzlík
It seems as gdm login screen now in F16/F17 not offer language and
keyboard layout selection, thus my question:
- It is possible somewhere in configuration turn on this offer?
- when not, which login manager is able do it? (I switched to Xfce
from F14, thus preferably some one appropriate for this DE)
Thanks, Franta

F16 - Install Wine - dependency problem?
by Jeffrey Ross
I tried to install wine with a simple "yum -y install wine" and of
course I got a whole list of dependencies that needed to be installed as
well, however the installation failed with this dependency requirement:
--> Processing Dependency: libsqlite3.so.0 for package:
nss-softokn-3.13.4-1.fc16.i686
---> Package pixman.i686 0:0.24.4-1.fc16 will be installed
--> Running transaction check
---> Package sqlite.i686 0:3.7.7.1-1.fc16 will be installed
--> Processing Dependency: libreadline.so.6 for package:
sqlite-3.7.7.1-1.fc16.i686
--> Running transaction check
---> Package readline.i686 0:6.2-2.fc16 will be installed
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Protected multilib versions: sqlite-3.7.7.1-1.fc16.i686 !=
sqlite-3.7.9-1.fc17.x86_64
system is x86_64
How can I either tell yum that 3.7.7.1-1 is ok (which is currently on
the system) or upgrade to 3.7.9-1.fc17?
Thanks, Jeff

Issues with ibus in fedora 17
by Kalpa Welivitigoda
Hi, I have some two issues with using ibus with fedora 17,
1) How can I change the default "<Control> Space" key combination to
change the input method. For example I want it to be changed to the
right alter key.
2) When I change the input method, it is applied to all the windows. I
want it to be applied only to the window from which I changed the
input method. How can I do this. I am using GNOME 3
