Samba 3.6.8 released yesterday
by Fernando Cassia
A new version of Samba was released yesterday with several important
bugfixes (at least for me wrt Win2K and NFSv4 Linux interop)
http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.6.8.html
Does Fedora provide updated builds of Samba during the lifetime of a given
Fedora version?

F17 - Sound quit working
by John Wendel
Fedora 17 with updates from "updates testing".
My sound stopped working with the latest set of updates. The sound
device files don't get created, except for the "timer", and the sound
drivers don't get loaded.
The only error message I can find is in the messages log, "udevd[382]:
Error running install command for snd_pcm".
I fixed the problem by creating the /dev/snd files and running modprobe
for the kernel modules.
Anyone else seeing this problem? If it isn't just me I'll bugzilla.
Thanks,
John

Connect to nfs from iPad -
by Bob Goodwin
Does anyone have any experience connecting to an nfs4 server from an
iPad/
I know little more about the iPad than how to turn it on but there
are a couple of them on my LAN and I would like to give them access
to my file server. Google suggests I need to buy an Apple
application "Filebrowser" which I can do but am wondering if that's
the right approach?
Any help appreciated,
Bob

I normally don't use Preugrade. The Warning message on the page that
you have linked above is what influenced my decision to use PreUpgrade.
It says "Warning: There is a general warning about upgrading via. yum
being unsupported at the top of this page. However Fedora 17 is very
special. You should seriously consider stopping now and just using
anaconda via. DVD or preupgrade, unlike all previous releases it's what
the yum/rpm developers recommend. Continue at your own risk." This
comment makes it seem like PreUpgrade is a better option.
So, now that I've chosen this road, I am certainly wishing that I would
have just done a fresh install and that's likely where I will end up.
I've solved the dracut problem with the following steps:
1. grub2-mkconfig
2. Modify /boot/grub2/grub.cfg to remove all UUID references and
replaced with device refs (/dev/sdax). I'm not sure why but the UUIDs
were confusing dracut. They were correct, but no matter what I tried it
would not work.
3. dracut
4. Reboot
I can now boot up to the point where the NVIDIA driver loads. This
fails because it still has the FC16 variant installed. I've tried to
remove and reinstall the FC17 version, but it's not working. Grub seems
to have a $releasever reference to FC16. Odd given that
/etc/fedora-realease and every other reference is to FC17. I'm going to
try to fix this tonight. If I can't get it working, I'm just going to
backup my data and do a fresh install.

Software Removal....
by EGO-II.1
Hey all,
I'm running F-17 on a 32 Bit System with 3GB RAM, and an Intel 2935
Proc. My problem is: I'm trying to remove some apps that are installed,
namely ones that don't even function....some title are: "Tetravex" -
Some sort of mutated Sudoku game, "Nibbles" some form of worm game and a
few others. I have tried going to the "Add / Remove Software" module but
it doesn't even find these games. So how can I get rid of them without
having to do a total reinstall? I tried having yum do it, but when I
type the names of the games in yum it states there's nothing to remove
or uninstall because it fins nothing!
Cheers!

Installing MATE
by Bill Davidsen
I got some questions about MATE and wanted to install it and actually see how it
worked. I started with a machine on fc17, which had Cinnamon and XFCE installed.
After doing the yum install, I don't see MATE in the list of managers available
at login. Before I spend a lot of time in documentation, it this normal? Does it
not drop in like KDE, etc?
