A Look at Fedora 18

Looking at the Fedora 18 from a Live Cd I found that Gnome is following the tradition of not following its tradition. Clicking on Activities no longer gives you Applications item at the top. Together with the standard applications on the left side of the screen you get a icon that looks like a rectangle of rectangles. Clicking on the at gives you the previous Application display. X and file permissions

Is it possible that X somehow makes a file inaccessible not when it's running but only when it (X) is shown? Here's what happens: In a virtual console, $ cat /dev/snd/controlC0 [just to see if it's accessible] returns cat: /dev/snd/controlC0: File descriptor in bad state (in a VC) so the file is accessible - that's all that matters now. (Of course, it's not an ordinary file, and given its permissions: crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 5 Jan 20 02:34 /dev/snd/controlC0 and that the user I'm doing this as is not in the audio group, I find this result surprising - but since it's the one I want, I won't worry about it for now :-)) However, if I do $ sleep 10 ; cat /dev/snd/controlC0 and then switch to X (which has been running all the time), wait for more than 10 secs and switch back, I see cat: /dev/snd/controlC0: Permission denied (Meanwhile, the permissions are still crw-rw----+) It doesn't matter if X is just an X server, or a full xfce desktop. And lsof doesn't show anything that's using /dev/snd/controlC0 All this is interesting for me because I'm trying to find out the reason why sound works in a VC but not in X, and strace led me in this direction. I'd appreciate any insight or hints about this. Andras

Grub2 installation after upgrading to F18

I have two machines with atypical disk layouts that I am upgrading to F18. (So far, I've upgraded three using fedup network with no significant issues other than this question.) 1. I have a machine with two drives and software RAID 1. Do I need to do anything special as far as installing grub2 on the second drive? Do I need to bother at all? 2. I have a laptop with Windows 7 installed at the factory. When I installed Fedora before, I installed grub in the /boot partition rather than in the MBR and made /boot the active boot partition. What's the best strategy here for installing grub2? In the MBR? Is it safe to install in /boot? Thanks. -- Matthew Saltzman Clemson University Math Sciences mjs AT clemson DOT edu

Keyboard and mouse freezes with F18

I'm having a problem with F18 (updated from F17 using fedup and distro-sync). The system configuration is: Intel i915 onboard chipset Hardwired keyboard and mouse Flatron W2243S monitor F18 x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.13.1-4.fc18.x86_64 KDE 4.9.5-2.fc18.x86_64 qt-4.8.4-6.fc18.x86_64 Mesa 9.0.1-3.fc18.x86_64 The problem appears after a long period of inactivity (but only some of the time). I have the screensaver turned off and power management set to dim the monitor but not power it down. The screen is lit but keyboard and mouse are unresponsive, including Ctrl-Alt-Fn combinations. The system is not hung as I can SSH in and everything seems to be working, but attempts to use systemctl start runlevel3.target (or ... 5.target) have no effect. The only option appears to be rebooting. Anyone else seen this? poc

F18 Splash screen is not shown

audio works in VC but not in an xterm

This is an up-to-date, PulseAudio-less F18/Xfce running on an eeepc. Use existing Partition without formatting when installing F18 ?

Previous to Fedora 18 I used to share the /boot/ partition /dev/sda1 between two systems (e.g F17 and F16) Now It only seems to be possible to format partitions before you can add it to the installation. Any trick around this ? Cheers O.

[F18] keepassx auto type pastes rubbish

I use keepassx to store my passwords. I have set Ctrl+Shift+K to open the auto-type window where I can select the password entry that is then auto-typed in the fields (using firefox 18.0-1.fc18). F18 comes with keepassx version: keepassx.x86_64 0.4.3-6.fc18 @fedora. It pastes only rubbish when using auto-typing (I can see this in the user name field that contains plenty of special characters like ^@#... On F17, it worked perfectly well with version 0.4.3-5.fc17 What happened? Frédéric
