Best places to go for assistance with cloud questions?

Hi, I have a few fc17 installs, and would like to get more involved with the cloud services that are available. I'd like to know the differences in the capabilities between fc17/fc18 and RHEL? Are these clouds primarily for data storage, or can I use fedora as a front-end where my mail applications (such as webmail and pop/imap) would access data in an Amazon cloud? This still leaves a single point of failure in my fedora system, however. Where can I go for basic information on the process involved with setting up such a system? I've read the fedora "cloud guide" draft, but it's still lacking significant bits of information, and is specific to a relationship with Amazon. What is the difference between OpenStack, Sheepdog, and Eucalyptus? I'm trying to create a fully fault-tolerant mail system, where if the front-end webmail system or the back-end spam/virus processing, or even the mailboxes, somehow become inaccessible, it is mirrored on another system and will automatically fail over to that system. Is there a single product that will do this, or do I need to master all of the above programs? I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to a discussion on the different technologies, and a description for an advanced admin to get started implementing this solution. Thanks, Alex

fail2ban questions

Hi, I have an fc17 install with a few fail2ban jail entries such as this: [ssh-iptables] enabled = true filter = sshd action = iptables[name=SSH, port=ssh, protocol=tcp] sendmail-whois[name=SSH, dest=myuser(a)mydomain.com, sender=dmin(a)mydomain.com] logpath = /var/log/secure maxretry = 5 There doesn't seem to be a man page for this, and I can't really find any local configuration documentation. How can I keep the rule enabled but not have it send an email for every IP that it blocks? Is the only way to delete the dest= and sender= options? Thanks, Alex

Input method in Qt and Java apps

Hello, I'm a Portuguese user and, in FC18 (after upgrade from FC17), I no longer have correct keyboard input in Qt apps (Nixnote and Skype). Gnome apps are ok. imsettings-list 1: IBus[ibus.conf] (recommended) 2: X compose table[xcompose.conf] 3: im-cedilla[im-cedilla.conf] $ imsettings-info Xinput file: /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/none.conf GTK+ immodule: gtk-im-context-simple Qt immodule: xim XMODIFIERS: @im=none XIM server: Preferences: Auxiliary: Short Description: none Long Description: Icon file: imsettings-unknown Is system default: FALSE Is user default: TRUE Is XIM server: FALSE im-chooser shows no input method selected. If I try to choose, I get the following error box: Failed to switch Input Method GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._imsettings_2derror_2dquark.Code5: Current desktop isn't targeted by Input Method. I don't much about ibus, but it seems ibus-daemon is not running, maybe it should be. I tried running it manually but it seems to make no difference. So, I guess I'm stuck and need help to solve this... TIA, Nuno

Fedora-18 installation from KDE Live USB

I installed the Fedora-18 KDE Live CD on a USB stick, with sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr /tmp/Fedora-18*.iso /dev/sdb1 (I tried first with liveusb-creator but on re-booting with this USB stick I got the message "Missing operating system".) In any case I clicked on "Install on Hard Disk". This did not see my WiFi connection (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG on a Thinkpad T60). But that was not fatal, and I was allowed to continue. However, what was much more off-putting was that after giving a hostname for the laptop I seemed to be told that my hard disk would be "automatically partitioned". As I wanted to install Fedora-18 on a spare partition, keeping Fedora-17 as an option, this was unwelcome news. Has there in fact been a change in the Hard Disk installation from KDE Live? As I recall, with Fedora-17 (and before) one could opt for "Custom Layout". Problem whit F18

The problem That I have is, I am use Fedora 17 and it works fine,download fedora 18 xfce 32 bit, from the website of fedora check withchecksum, and is all right.restart with the live CD and it works fine, but when installingthe installation freezes at language selection screenwhy this happens? ... as I said earlier is very rare because F17 runsfine on my system.there is a way to upgrade F17 to F18 from the LiveCD?have problems with the Kernel?Dell Optiplex g270 32bitI'll be very grateful for your help

F18, Gnome: displays failing to span

I have a new laptop that I've just installed F18 on. I've plugged an external VGA monitor in, and used System Settings / Displays to position the external screen above the laptop screen. This works as far as the mouse is concerned: I can move the cursor above the top of the laptop LCD and it appears near the bottom of the external LCD. However, I can't open any windows in, or move any windows to the top external LCD. When dragging a window using the title bar, the window stops moving as soon as the window's title bar hits the black gnome top bar at the top of the laptop screen, even though the mouse continues into the external screen above. When dragging a window using Super + left mouse, I can drag a window about 80% into the top screen, but it bounces back as soon as the mouse is released. Within gnome shell, I can drag windows to the top screen, but again they bounce back when the mouse is released. Preventing resolv.conf from being recreated

Hi, I have removed NetworkManager from my system, disabled it using systemctl, and enabled standard 'network', yet every time I reboot, /etc/resolv.conf is somehow recreated with information from a dhcp server on the network. I've also removed any package pertaining to dhcp, including dhcpclient. How is this file being recreated? # Generated by NetworkManager search inside.mynetwork.com mynetwork.com nameserver 68.XXX.YYY.44 So frustrating. Thanks, Alex

any foss bitmap editor which can do this?

Is there any FOSS bitmap editor with a command line, allowing me to experiment with, for instance, the circle drawing function and specify the circle´s position on screen, and size (radius)?. Suppose you need to take a given bitmap, and draw over it 40 circles, spaced "x" pixels apart, starting at positions x,y for the first circle, and make it antialiased and 2 px wide, with -for instance- a 50 px radius each. Of course doing this by hand, using the mouse pointer, is very difficult, so I need something that lets me manually specify the coordinates and starting position for each circle drawn. I´ve got GIMP-phobia so please don´t tell me GIMP. ;) I´m looking for something like Paint Shop Pro on the windows world (which is what I normally use for bitmap editing, under WINE), or, well, Deluxe Paint on the Amiga. ;-) Any suggestions? fedora 17 no wireless

First time to try to use wireless since installing F17. Connects, but doesn't succeed at authorizing. Keeps trying to authorize for several minutes, then gives up. /var/log/messages shows stuff like NetworkManager[483]: <info> (wlan0): device state change: disconnected -> prepare (reason 'none') [30 40 0] tries again and says things like ... has security, but secrets are required ... has security, and secrets exist. No new secrets required. Various stuff added, ... Stage 2 of 5 (Device Configure) complete. ... Config: set interface ap_scan to 1 ... supplicant interface state: disconnected -> scanning scanning, authenticating, associating, handshake completed, beginning IP6 addrconf, and avahi-daemon[514]: Withdrawing address record for (IPv6 address, I think) on wlan0. IPv6 scheduled, started, completed, DHCPv4 request timed out. canceled DHCP transaction, and ... wlan0: deauthenticating from (MAC address) by local choice (reason=3) ... <info> (wlan0): device state change: ip-config -> failed (reason 'ip-config-unavailable') [70 120 5] and so forth. I'm going to try to set up /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf by hand when I have time tomorrow, but I'm curious as to why I would need to do the set up by hand for F17 when F16 just did its thing and it worked. -- Joel Rees
