Log output of bash script when part is run as different user
by Mark Haney
I've got a bash script that has two parts.
1. runs a script as a different user (using su <username> -c <script>)
2. when that part finishes, the script does a copy of the files created to
another directory
I want to log the output of the entire script into one file. I.e.:
internal script>external script> logfile
What's the best way to do this? I can clarify, I hope, I've edited this a
dozen times to get what I want in as clear a message as possible.

user creation during installation
by Javier Perez
What happens if I am installing over an existing system.
I have a directory on its own /home partition
/home/username
During installation it ask to set an Administrator user.
One of the options is "Create a home directory for this user"
What happens here if the directory already exist, will it be erased? Or
will the installer use the existing directory?
Thanks

Re Gnome 3 groups or mailing list.
by Bill Case
Hi;
I have several small Gnome 3 issues I would like help with or discussion
about. Has anybody found a good way to communicate with gnome 3 users or
developers. I belong to the following:
gnome-list(a)gnome.org,
Gnome forum,
http://forums.worldofgnome.org,
over the last few days I have not received a response from any of them.
Nor am I unique. When I look at their recent responses none of them
show anything less than a couple of weeks old. Do people here who use
Fedora and Gnome 3 have a better Gnome interaction and where?

No sound for really old program
by Alan Evans
Hi all!
I gave my kid a netbook with Linux on it, and he noticed an ancient (circa
RH6) game on one of my shelves. I told him that he could try to install it,
figuring that there was no chance. But it worked! Except, no sound, which
doesn't surprise me.
Now I do remember years back that there was some sort of wrapper I could
execute old programs in that would allow them to work with the latest (at
the time) sound architecture. But I don't remember what it was called. And
in any case, it probably wouldn't work now either.
Is there such a thing nowadays that will expose old audio hooks to programs
running on modern systems?

HD to SSD question.
by Erik P. Olsen
I plan to swap the HD on my laptop with an SSD of same size. Will it work OK if
I dd the HD to an external HD, swap the HD with the SSD and dd the contents back
to the SSD? I believe I can use knoppix to the process.

HDMI CEC?
by Tom Horsley
Anyone know if linux video drivers with HDMI can generate the
HDMI CEC signals? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#CEC).
The TV I use for a display doesn't support the "normal" DPMS
power management. It would be nifty to be able to turn it
on via the HDMI connection.

BASH and wildcard expansion
by Mark Haney
I've hit a problem I can't quite figure out which a bash script I'm
writing. I'm trying to copy backup files in the format
2013-August-18--1123.zip to an NFS share. I want to have the script copy
the file with just the date. In bash I've setup vars that get the current
date:
# Date variables
log_year=`date "+%Y"`
log_month=`date "+%B"`
log_day=`date "+%d"`
# Filename format YYYY_MM_DD--HHMM.zip
filename=$log_year"-"$log_month"-"$log_day"--"/*".zip"
The problem is I don't really care about the stuff after the '--'. I.e.
from the CLI I'd just 'ls 2013-August-18--*.zip' to get all the files with
that date in the file name. How can I do that in a bash script?

Twitter for Thunderbird or Linux in general
by Martin S
After the "recent" changes to Twitter API "half" of the Linux twitter
clients died horribly (can't log in) as they don't seem to support the 1.1
API.
I wouldn't normally bother but our organisation has been "strongly
encouraged" to monitor twitter so we can act on stuff posted there.
Any suggestions of some piece of software for either Thunderbird or Linux
in general?

Something simple re: a new partition under lvm.
by Bill Case
Hi;
There used to be a gui for lvm commands. It seems to have disappeared.
I have browsed the man pages. It seems to involve more risk and
learning than I want at the moment.
What I want to do is simple. I have a freshly installed Fedor 19 on a
500 Gig drive. Anaconda install lvm. I want to add a partition were I
can safely store my routine backups. I would think that 50 Gig would be
more than enough room. I am used to using parted, or gparted, but
parted doesn't configure lvm, I understand. (The more I read the less
sure I am of that,)
Were on the drive is the best place to put such a partition. I suspect
it doesn't matter. The last 50 gigs seems appropriate. So under lvm
how do I reconfigure my drive to have this extra partition.
