I found that rc-local.service was not run consistently.
Create a crontab *as root* and use the @reboot command for cron.
ie a line like '@reboot /usr/local/sbin/my-startup-backup.sh
Regarding this:
rsync -av --delete /home/programmers/Labels/*.java /media/saved_lab
rsync -avr --delete /home/programmers/Labels/*.java /media/saved_lab
The message that I get is :
sending incremental file list
rsync: link_stat
"/home/programmers/java/PROJECTS_development/Labels/*.java" failed: No
such file or directory
There is something very wrong here. I suspect that you have edited the
command lines in your example, since rsync should only be looking in and
below /home/programmers/Labels and NOT in /home/programners/java
As noted in the link posted, you should look at rsync's --include and
--exclude files.
Although if this is a backup situation, maybe the -u (--update) switch
is what you really need. Using '-au' will find all files which have been
updated relative to the destination version. (And you may then want to
use --delete-after.).

Thank you.

Notification Process Doesn't Show Progress
by Stephen Morris
Whenever I use dolphin to copy files from directories on my harddisk to
a mount, irrespective of whether that mount is a USB Stick or a network
mount, the progress is displayed in the notification application sitting
in the system tray. This notification application does not show an
updating progress bar, instead it shows it as 100% complete with a
transfer speed of 0 B/sec, but the animated icon for the notification
app indicates it is processing. How do I get this app to show the real
progress, instead of its currently functionality of only notifying when
the process has actually completed?

Permanently mount a USB Hard Disk for Security purpose
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
for the first time I have to solve this kind of problem, that's way I
would like to ask for some advice how to make correctly the installation of
a "permanent" USB hard drive to use for saving data ...
The HD in question should have two partitions:
-
the first one to be used to synchronize *immediately* (rsync) important
data for backup purposes
-
the second one to use, always backup purposes, to make *scheduled*
backups of other type of data.
I think a USB HD should be suitable for this need (backup) for being able
easily to remove and immediatly use, the stored data, on another computers.
I think I should first create -on the USB Hard Disk (that I could to use
Gparted for this purpose)- two partitions of type MSDOS and then I should
format these partitions in FAT32 format:
this is because 'the MSDOS type of partition and format FAT32 should ensure
the possibility' of using the data both on Linux and on Windows systems.
Secondly, the HD should be mounted on the computer ... permanently.
Mkdir /media/resqueHD
mount -t fat32 /dev/sdd1 /media/resqueHD
and finally, the mounting should be made permanent by adding the line:
/dev/sdd1
/media/mydata ext4 defaults 0 0
to file /etc/fstab
finally
rsync -av dataToCheck /media/resqueHD/directory
Is this correct... and if it is also convenient to do ?
Thank you
Regards
Angelo

RE: Alternative for acroread (Adobe Reader) in LINUX?
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Funny, one sees these questions on the lists of all distros ....
With regards to filling-in form, sometimes one can manage around it, like Silvia wrote.
But when it comes to official PDF's from (regional) gouvernements, TAXes, etc etc, that are digitally signed, only acrobats seems to work.
And forget about using wine.
Only _really_ working solutions are either dual-boot, or a virtual-machine desktop.
Or perhaps a joined effort during Google summer event?
Alas.

Use "pdf import" tool. It's a Libreoffice addon. That tool allows you to open your pdfs, edit them and save them as odg or export them as pdf again.
Another useful tool is Okular, which is a stand alone for pdf.
Hope it helps,
Sylvia

64bit skype client needed
by JD
I have been trying to locate a fully 64bit skype client to no avail;
a client that will not require 32 bit dependencies.
Any info on that?
MS is not supporting linux x86_64 and who can blame them?
They do not like Linux. They might even wish it would disappear.

4k video fails after update
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
[This is a very incomplete report. Sorry. I wanted to get this out
before I go to bed. More when I have time.]
I have a Seiki "4k" monitor that I'm using on my Fedora 20 system. I'm
using the nvidia proprietary driver with a Geforce GTX 650 video card. It
has been working well for a while.
I don't remember whether it can work with nouveau. Before I installed
this monitor, I'd switch to the proprietary driver whenever I got annoyed
with crashes in the nouveau driver. Once I switch, it takes a new Fedora
release for me to bother trying nouveau again.
After updates from the last week or so, when I boot, I no longer see
anything on the screen.
It looks like the backlight is on.
The monitor tells me that it detects the 3840x2160 @ 30Hz signal, but
I don't see it.
I can switch to a text console. In fact, that's how I'm composing this
message. And I can switch back.
I can log in blind on the X display (as long as I guess right about
where I am in the invisible dialogue).
I can grab Xorg.0.log -- X is running. Nothing jumps out at me as
wrong.
>From the text console, I can run xrandr and all appears to be as I
think that it should be:
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 16384 x 16384

640x480 75.00 72.81 59.94
I've tried to choose a more mainstream mode with xrandr but
have failed.
I've tried to blacklist the nvidia module but have failed. I tried to
use this on the kernel line in /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg:
rd.driver.blacklist=nvidia
(from googling) but the nvidia module still gets loaded and Xorg uses
it. Is there a quick and dirty way of suppressing the nvidia drive
without removing it?
