OT: determining when a pdf file was created/by whom
by Ranjan Maitra
Dear friends,
I have been e-mailed a pdf file and I wanted to know who the author was and what the date/time of creation was. Is it possible for me to find this information using tools available on the F24 repositories?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

setting up dictd-server on local machine
by Steve Foley
Hello, can anyone kindly point me in the right direction in setting up dictd-server. I am experienced with Linux but new to Fedora and SELinux.
I have installed the package:
dnf install dictd-service
Went through the docs:
/usr/share/doc/dictd-server/INSTALL
Added a dictd config file:
/etc/dictd.conf
Now, I'm a bit confused. There are several example config files in the doc directory, plus a folder of SELinux examples. I haven't allowed access in the dictd.conf file since I'm only going to run on a local machine.
When I attempt to start with systemctl:
/bin/systemctl status dictd.service
I get the following error:
● dictd.service - Dictd Dictionary Server Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/dictd.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2016-12-09 00:09:12 EST; 41s ago
Process: 2493 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/dictd --listen-to 127.0.0.1 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Main PID: 2494 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Dec 09 00:09:12 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Starting Dictd Dictionary Server Daemon...
Dec 09 00:09:12 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Started Dictd Dictionary Server Daemon.
Dec 09 00:09:12 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: dictd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Dec 09 00:09:12 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: dictd.service: Unit entered failed state.
Dec 09 00:09:12 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: dictd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
I looked through the internet for references, but I guess installing dictd-server on Fedora 25 is not a popular thing to do. Thanks!

cannot install vmwre tools from the command line
by ProPAAS DBA
All;
I've installed vmware workstation on Fedora 25, now when I try to update
vmware tools I get a gui that fails with:
There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and
if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator
I want to just doit the old way but I dont have a choice whn I click VM
--> Install vmwre tools
I saw a post awhile back that indicated a package to install via dnf and
it was solved however I cannot find it and the search on the fedora list
site seems to be broken - I cannot go past the first page of results
Anyone know what the fx is to get vmware to simply mount the tools as a
cd when I choose VM -> install vmware tools ?
Thanks in advance

Brother, can you spare a printer?
by Geoffrey Leach
Sorry, I couldn't resist ;-)
I'm looking at a Brother HL-L2340DW laser printer. I can't discover any specifics as to whether it works with Fedora, although, "Linux is supported"
Does anyone have any experience?
Thanks.

setup for localhost web (PHP) development
by Gour
Hello,
I'm interested what would be recommended way to configure my desktop
machine as localhost for web (PHP) development?
I've few entries like:
127.0.0.1 foo.local bar.local
in my /etc/hosts in order to be able to access development sites via
aliases, e.g. http://foo.local/
Moreover, I'd like to work on the sites under my regular user account
using my uid/gid and keep the development under VCS.
I admit I'm not overly familiar with Apache2 setup and certainly not on
Fedora (on Debian it is configured a bit different) to which I recently
migrated.
As a temporary workaround to make it somehow work I configured Apache to
run under my uid/gid, put my foo/bar sites under /var/www/html as
VirtualHosts, chown-ed them as uid/gid and chmod-ed to 775.
Finally, I symlinked them to ~/prj/www/{foo,bar}...
I have feeling it's pretty ugly setup, so I'm humbly looking for some
improvement tips how to configure Apache+PHP for working on several
web sites on localhost machine?
Sincerely,
Gour

Re: setting up dictd-server on local machine
by Steve Foley
UPDATE:
running:
[root@localhost ~]# dictd
works great and I can access the wordnet dictionary through xfce's
dictionary reader, so there's a problem with starting it with systemctl.
Anyway, I don't want to take up more of the groups time. Thanks everyone
and I'll figure it out one way or another :-)

Go language
by Howard Howell
Hi, everyone,
I loaded go using dnf...
sudo dnf install go
I am on an AMD64 system with F24 installed.
The issue is that the /usr/share/gocode/src/code.google.com/p
was empty. I installed the golang...devel package and it added the
go.tools directory with several subdirectories and other things. The
issue is that the various libraries needed by the code I am working on
are not loaded. I downloaded the latest archive from golang.org and it
appears the various things that I need, or at least most of them are in
the archive. The problem is that removing the go packages via DNF will
probably decimate the system. So how do I remove the current package
or update it with the required libraries? I have not been successful
in searching for the required packages or libraries using dnf.

writing iso image to blank dvd
by JD
Any ideas?
As root:
# time dd if=/tmp/Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-24-1.2.iso of=/dev/sr0
bs=128K
dd: failed to open ‘/dev/sr0’: Read-only file system
real 0m0.04s
user 0m0.00s
sys 0m0.00s
# ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Dec 4 00:55 /dev/sr0
I have an icon on the desktop (after I inserted the blank DVD into the
dvd drive), that says:
Blank DVD-R Disk
Mount does not show /dev/sr0 as being mounted.

Hi Doug
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
I had to change dll.conf, commenting out all the printer filenames
except epson2, and in epson2.conf I added the usb 0x04b8 0x110b & left
the net autodiscovery as it was.
All now seems to work as I expect! Xsane now shows 2 posssible scanners.
Again many thanks to you & to Greg for getting me out of the dark brown
stuff!!
