Virtual network bridge stopped working after upgrading to F27
by Sam Varshavchik
I have a server with a KVM/Qemu VM running Windows that I need to be
reachable by other machines on my LAN.
A long time I stumbled my way into making it happen. I am a bit fuzzy on the
details, but I ended up creating a virtual network bridge of some kind.
Well, this whole thing broke after upgrading this server to F27, and the
network simply didn't came up at all, on the entire server. There were no
error messages, anywhere that I could find. The network simply didn't come
up at all. Neither "ifup vnet0" nor "ifup eth0" did, apparently, anything.
No error messages, no attempt to acquire the server's normal IP address via
DHCP.
I quickly figured out how to disable the network bridge, and reset the guest
Windows VM to use NAT to have its own network access, and I'm back in
business.
Now, with the crisis averted, I'd like to figure out how to get my Windows
VM back on the LAN, with its own static IP address. Originally this whole
thing was set up ten or so years ago, and I guess things change, and
something needs to be configured differently, but I have no idea how to do
it now. Pointers to some FAQs appreciated.
Here's what little info I have. This is how things worked prior to this
painfull upgrade.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/eth0 is my real ethernet port. In order to
regain network connectivity, I commented out the BRIDGE=vnet0 setting:
DEVICE=eth0
#BRIDGE=vnet0
HWADDR=00:30:48:FC:83:FA
ONBOOT=yes
OPTIONS=layer2=1
TYPE=Ethernet
NM_CONTROLLED=no
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=yes
DEFROUTE=yes
PEERDNS=yes
PEERROUTES=yes
IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes
IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes
IPV6_DEFROUTE=yes
IPV6_PEERDNS=yes
IPV6_PEERROUTES=yes
IPV6_FAILURE_FATAL=no
NAME="System eth0"
#UUID=5fb06bd0-0bb0-7ffb-45f1-d6edd65f3e03
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ETHTOOL_OPTS="advertise 030"
I also had a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-vnet0, which I renamed to
ifcfg-vnet0.orig. I also had to go into virt-manager, and reset the guest's
virtual NIC to "Virtual network 'default': NAT" setting.
After doing that, renaming ifcfg-vnet0, and commenting out "BRIDGE=vnet0" in
eth0, this server was able to acquire its usual static IP address via DHCP,
and be back in business. The guest Windows VM now has network access via its
NAT, but I'd like to figure out how to get it bridged back to my real LAN.
The DHCP server knows both the network port's real MAC address, and the MAC
address of the virtual guest VM's network port.
Before I disabled the bridge, "ifup eth0" and "ifup vnet0" just did nothing,
as far as I could tell. No error messages anywhere I looked, the commands
just returned, after a brief pause, but without trying to obtain the
server's real IP address via DHCP. Thanks for any pointers.

broken pipe installing kernel?
by Tom Horsley
Just installed f27 workstation and did the first "dnf update"
When it is running the script to install the updated kernel, I
see this come out on the terminal:
cat: broken pipe
That does not cause warm fuzzies :-).
The new kernel did seem to boot OK and I didn't notice any
problems.

Horrible keyboard in virtual machine
by Tom Horsley
I'm trying to install the f27 workstation live
image onto disk in a virtual machine (hosted on
f26).
It is impossible to type the passwords in the
root and new user screens. It gets so bogged down
it apparently thinks I've been holding down keys
which I haven't been holding down. I keep getting
the last character I typed repeated many timessssss
I suspect installing to disk, and checking the
password strength interactively is way too hard
for it to do at the same time.

HP Intel i5-8250U laptop - No audio
by Richard Shaw
I just installed F27 (dual booting with Win 10 that came with it) on my
wife's new laptop and everything seemed fine until she told me the sound
wasn't working.
I checked the usual stuff, that it was configured properly in
gnome-control-center and it showed that the speakers were selected and
configured for "Analog Stereo Duplex". I even installed pavucontrol and
looked there and everything seems fine. Volume sliders are not at 0%
(actually close to 100%)
Pulseaudio is running...
Alsa seems happy:
# aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Searching google there seems to be similar issues but most of them were
2016 or earlier posts and frequently the lack of the right kernel module
was part of the problem or alsa update.
I even tried installing the oldest kernel F26 provided (4.11?) and no dice.
Anyone else having this problem before I put in a bugzilla ticket? At this
point I'm not sure which component to assign it to.
Thanks,
Richard

Reusing downloaded packages for multiple system-upgrades
by Sam Varshavchik
With prior releases, I saved a bunch of bandwidth with system-upgrading
multiple machines by stashing away a copy of the downloaded
/var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade, and then copying it to the remaining boxes
upfront. That directory was just a flat directory, containing the downloaded
rpms, and their system-upgrades simply saw that most of the stuff was
already downloaded.
Looks like in F27, /var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade is an entire directory
structure, and each repository's packages are stashed away in subdirectory
that are tagged with the repository's current version tag.
What's the best way to minimize downloads now? I could make a copy of the
entire /var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade structure, but I will be rolling the
upgrades over the course of several days, during which I expect all the
update repos to be updated as usual, with their version tags changing.

with the following...

Going to upgrade your Fedora to version 27.
You may want to read Release Notes:

Hit Enter to continue or Ctrl + C to cancel.
Going to run 'dnf upgrade' before upgrading.
This step is highly recommended, but can be safely skipped.
