Yes Terry dmesg sees the device when the workstation is booted up, but
not when a media disk is put into it :(

Dumb question - will the drive see and boot from a bootable CD/DVD?
If not, you could have a dirty drive, or a dead drive. I had one die
on me the other day - the system sees it, and it tries to read a
disk when you put it in the drive, but it fails and show no media found.
