That's your choice of course. And certainly markup can be useful in
some contexts, but good MUAs do support it as well, either as HTML
(frowned upon here of course) or as Markdown (which Evolution now
supports).
I don't dispute that Discourse is free software. I do question its
usefulness as a *replacement* for mailing lists. It does have a
mailing-list mode, which in my limited experience is genuinely
terrible, to the extent that I find I have to open a browser to read
its messages in context.
When python made the move I was also curious about how well it would work out.
I've had email for since the beginning of time (well epoch+10 years atleast) and use
it all the time.
There was as lot of discussion on the mailing lists before the move about it
being a poor replacement for email, as here.
I hear that the email issues are being worked on, but I did not bother with getting
it to email me stuff. I find the New and Unread tracking the discourse does is good
enough that I can keep up to date and follow threads I'm contributing to.
