While we're on the topic: all the GNOME mailing lists are moving to
Discourse (similar to HyperKitty but much *much* worse). The ostensible
reasons for this included "better control of spam" and "Mailman depends
on Python 2", the latter being clearly nonsense as the Fedora lists run
on Mailman3 - which is why we have this HyperKitty crock in the first
place. (Note that GNOME hosting is provided by Red Hat, so go figure.)
The Evolution list has already been replaced, and as many of us have
decided that this is not a usable substitute we set up an alternative
list at:

If there is any danger of this nonsense happening to the Fedora lists,
I hope we get sufficient notice (GNOME originally gave us only 10 days

That's your choice of course. And certainly markup can be useful in
some contexts, but good MUAs do support it as well, either as HTML
(frowned upon here of course) or as Markdown (which Evolution now
supports).
I don't dispute that Discourse is free software. I do question its
usefulness as a *replacement* for mailing lists. It does have a
mailing-list mode, which in my limited experience is genuinely
terrible, to the extent that I find I have to open a browser to read
its messages in context.

That's your choice of course. And certainly markup can be useful in

I don't dispute that Discourse is free software. I do question its

When python made the move I was also curious about how well it would work out.
I've had email for since the beginning of time (well epoch+10 years atleast) and use
it all the time.
There was as lot of discussion on the mailing lists before the move about it
being a poor replacement for email, as here.
I hear that the email issues are being worked on, but I did not bother with getting
it to email me stuff. I find the New and Unread tracking the discourse does is good
enough that I can keep up to date and follow threads I'm contributing to.

I am the same way, but forums need not be social media and are essential
for any
community that wants to embrace new users. Many of my younger
colleagues
are not interested in email lists (because their email gets overwhelmed by

I have been using remote sensing forums from ESA and NASA for years.
Forums are essential for
remote sensing as you need to be able to share images. so have been used in
this community for decades.
The ESA Forum sends email with replies to my posts. A simple reply can be
made with email, but I generally
find it easier to reply using the forum software.
I do worry that bad actors will find ways to drive people away from forums:
NASA recently replaced the remote sensing forum I was using with a section
in a forum that supports many
different NASA Earth Data programs. NASA gets a lot of attention from bad
actors, so in addition to an
Earth Data user login, the new forum requires a CAPTCHA code for each
post. If I take too long researching
a response the CAPTCHA expires, so I have to compose a complex response
offline. This has greatly reduced
the number of active participants.
A colleague once suggested that access to specialized resources should
require a correct answer to a "skiill
testing" question. Recently the NASA and ESA forums have seen an increase
in (new) users posting images
with error messages where text would be better because the current search
tools don't scan images (I often r
eply to such posts with OCR text so searches will find the thread). The
current education system doesn't teach
students how to report problems (platform details, steps to reproduce the
problem) so the forums have started
getting too many posts with titles like "How to I solve Error: permission
denied".

My experience with using Discourse is as a phone app. It's reminiscent
of IRC (live chat via text, group voice chat, file sending). As I
recall, it has origins in the gaming fraternity, one of those group
VOIP things used alongside their networked games.
Live stuff suits some people. I can see its value in allowing
diagnosing an issue in real time. But that's dependent on responders
being there at the same time. And there can be too much noise going
on. I dabbled with IRC decades ago, but left it and never returned.
Spending all night chatting with strangers about whatever was just
eating up my spare time.
Email is good for people spread across multiple timezones, who can wait
for more than one response. Who'd like to post the "argh, I need help"
post as they give up on an issue and would like to tackle it tomorrow.
It's good for people who have some spare time to read through the days
posts, and respond where they can. It's far less demanding on you. I
can keep easily tabs on all the things going on in here (and easily
find old posts on something), I can't do that with discourse, or web
forums, that require clicking all over the place. Not to mention that
I have lots of other non-Fedora things I'm interested in.
It can have an searchable archive, but any time I've googled for the
solution to an issue, it's never returned a Fedora mail archive result
for me. I usually get Ubuntu forum results, often useless
(inapplicable, or answers from the floundering clueless). Sometimes
Reddit (of about a similar quality to the Ubuntu forums).
Does this archive exclude google? Even if it didn't, no matter what
medium you use, you can still get multiple people asking the same
question, because they (we) don't search first. Mind you, though, I
keep tabs on all the threads in here while I'm idle, so I've a fair
idea if someone else has brought up a subject I've got an interest in.
But it tends to be new issues that I see, I haven't noticed the
