I don't think it is anything _you_ changed.
OK - so maybe an update broke it.
I had the same experience
and have just lived with it (although it is irritating). On mine they
seem to auto-mount but I never get the desktop icon. If I manually do
an unmount then remount (from the CLI) the icon shows up.
It doesn't show up even after that. Ah well, no biggie.
