Just a quick note: if either /var or /home are full, X will not start.
I think /tmp may also be a problem if full.
By default, about 5% of the disk space is reserved for root. If free
space is low, then a normal user will be out of disk space, but root
might still have some of the reserved space. That sounds like it may be
the case here.
