FYI, my 3rd attempt to go to Linux failed. Ubuntu
didn't get anywhere - the startup install screen
would not show, just a blank screen. Tried 32 bit
and 64 bit - same failure.
Fedora 17 64 bit installed just fine. After updates I
got the "GPU-lockup - switching to software fbcon" problem.
I think I fixed that in an OS reinstallation with a lot of
work involving installing nvidia drivers.
The main problem was no local home network connection
(unable to mount location). I had internet connection
(unlike the previous time I tried to move to Linux), but
no home network. I spent a lot of time trying to figure
it out, but no luck. Maybe next time.
All this was on a brand new machine.
I'm back to Windows 7 for now. At least it works (sort of).
It sure was painful giving MS $100.

I'm sorry to report that I have no children that I know of. That,
however, hasn't stopped me from seeing some great animation. I
recommend that you see the original Madagascar first, because then
you'll be familiar with most of the characters in the second one, and
you'll find out just how well penguins can fly. Sorry for sliding
off-topic here, but it's not like it's starting a long conversation.

developers, coders, and programers do not talk badly about any code.
Most of the world uses Windows in some form. Then there are the few that
use Mac OS. Then there is Linux. Used by a very few and the Linux users,
using pretty much the same 'stuff', argue that 'mine Linux' is better
than yours.

Well I apologize if my comments seem to be Windows bashers" I meant only
that as a "general populace user of Windows for years" that I'd had it
up to "here" with stuff that just doesn't work, but is touted to be the
latest and greatest, I guess you are right in that Linux is pretty much

I used Windows 2. Along with OS/2 1.0, 2.0, 3.x Warp and through 4.x. Warp.
OS/2 was it and it's problem was that Joe/Jane Average User was not
skilled enough to set it up. Not meant for home. Linux *used* to be like
that. You knew it, or learned it, or it might not work. Today is different.

FWIW, I have a legitimate personal copy of Windows 2000. The upgrade
cost about the same as a Windows 9x upgrade. I can’t remember at this
point in time if it allowed an upgrade from 9x: I upgraded from a
student version of Windows NT.
I’ve still got a virtual machine around running Windows 2000, although
it’s ages since I booted it. (Don’t worry: when Windows 2000 went EOL, I
removed the virtual network card, so it’s now standalone).

Does that mean that it works as well as Windows 7 does, or that it
doesn't work as well as it should, even when running Windows? In
the latter case, complain to the OEM, let them find out what's wrong
with it, and then, when it's running Windows 7 as well as it's
supposed to, try Linux again.
He is usingi Windows NT 5. Windows 2000. Which is seriously old and long
time EOL. :-)
Win 2000 was not meant for home use. It was a business release and was
very expensive. He either has a used machine that he bought at a swap
meet or a Pirated copy. My 'guess' would be that Linux does not 'run'
for him because his machine is too old and the hardware might require
special (non free) drivers. And I would think that the money he says he
will spend on Windows 7 will be a waste too. :-)

It's hard for any OS to support brand new hardware that may have bugs in
the hardware itself or not be fully supported with specifications about
how the hardware works. Linux is not the "bad guy" here.

..and you had to install drivers for all your hardware to be fully
recognized. Windows is not the "good guy" in your situation.

why you think writing a one-off rant on here will solve your problem. If

You aren't that far from getting a good setup. Seems a bit silly to give up just
because of that.

I agree, I had to learn the ropes with Windows or else I had to suffer
not being able to function not only in the home but the workplace as
well. Imagine living in this day and age and someone saying they have NO
IDEA what you're talking about when you tell them you're going to send
them an Excel Spreadsheet! It would be like having a conversation with
Fred Flintstone, but it still just seemed to me that every release of a
Windows OS would be full of glitches, bugs, or things wouldn't work the
way they were supposed to, now I know the same could be said for Linux
today, but the difference is that most people who progress to Linux are
usually people who've tried their best to keep up with the patches,
Service Packs, and such nonsense that hinders being truly productive for
long periods of time, and by long periods of time I mean more than a few
months...I mean YEARS! (Think of people who are only now moving up from
F15...and we're heading into F18!).....sorry...I think I'm
"ranting"....LoL!

what kind of machine is. It is a laptop, a netbook, a PC? What amount
of RAM? Which processors? Exactly, how did you install and what
errors you had? Do you know about live CD / USB that lets you try the
Operative System before install it?
Things like that are very useful. If you don't give us data we can't
help you.

Sorry to hear of your painful experience. I wanted to offer that I Have had
great luck with the live-creator on usb thumb drives.
i can do a complete basic install w/o internet connection, but to get up to
date,
you need a live access to the internet...
I think there is a way to create the thumb drive from windows. the best
part is,
you can boot from the thumb drive for a test drive of linux w/o clobbering
your
current M$ install (although IMHO, nuking M$ is always the best policy! :)

Oh, the hell I've gone through trying to get Windows to install...
First there were PCs that couldn't boot from a CD, so you'd need to boot
from a floppy, and shoehorn the CD drivers into it for your particular
CD-ROM. Of course you wouldn't know which drivers to use, because the
card your drive plugged into came with a disc full of numerous different
drivers, that either a program on the disc was supposed to pick the
right one (and didn't), or you were expected to figure it out by divine
intervention.
That was only the beginning. If you were lucky, Windows would finish
the installation without crashing, but you'd have no sound, 16 colours
in 600 by 480, no network, and perhaps no working mouse. You'd have to
gather driver discs for all of them, possibly downloading things from
the net on another PC, and go through the find the right driver
shenanigans I'd already mentioned, with the added fun of Windows messing
around at the same time. Would I have to boot up for each device,
insert the disc when Windows asked for it, and try to get the right
driver. Or would have to boot up, cancel the insert disc, abort the
driver installation. Insert a disc, manually install something from the
disc, manually scan for new hardware, and hope that Windows would make
use of the driver I just installed.
Naturally, there'll be several reboots involved in this. And the
sequence of which drivers you install first, and which particular slots
anything was plugged into the motherboard, was essential to get right.
Although they claimed to share IRQs, that was only when not actually
using the hardware.
And this is always made all the more harder by the computing hardware
being old, cobbled together from various sources, with unlabelled
plug-in cards, and missing install discs.
