Problem with killing processes

Hi!

I have a Problem with killig Processes.

It is not possible for me to do it.

I tried kill ID, kill -KILL ID, killall -9 NAME but nothing worked.

I cant restart the machine so i have to find a way to kill this Processes.

11148 ?        S      0:00 /usr/lib/amanda/selfcheck
20763 ?        S      0:00 /usr/lib/amanda/selfcheck
21177 ?        S      0:00 /usr/lib/amanda/selfcheck

Can someone help?

Try to kill it from the root account.

Sometimes however I have the same problem, I use ksysguard to show me a list 
of processes and ksysguard seems to succeed were we mortals fail ;)

Sorry i did not said but it tried to kill the processes as root.

No, its a daemon which gets started remote from the backupserver

On Unix-like systems, kill -9 will only "fail" if the process is in the
middle of a system call to the kernel.

Well, to be precise, the signal is held until the system call returns,
and then the process is killed. But if the system call does not return
(or hasn't yet returned), then the process will just sit there.

The process name is amanda, so I imagine that what has happened is that
it has made a kernel system call to control a tape drive, and the tape
drive is in trouble (e.g. tape stuck).

Unless you have tape drives that are hot-swappable on the SCSI bus, you
may need to reset the computer to reset the hardware.

It's also possible that the tape drive itself needs maintenance.

But it's difficult to tell from here. Does /var/log/messages give you
any clue?

By the way, the custom on this list (as elsewhere) is to trim quoted

To be more precise... the signal is delivered. What happens after that
depends on which signal it is, and whether it is caught, and whether
there are multiple threads in the program, and what the priority of the
process is. Delivery and use of signals is a complex issue, not easily
disposed of. However, it is beginning to look like he needs a reboot
at least, if not a BHR[1].
