can't login as root at the graphical login prompt

Hi All,
    I've installed the fedora core 4, recently. I can login as a normal user but when
I try to login as root at the graphical login prompt, I receive the error message
"Root login is not allowed.". May I be missing some package(s) or some
configuration?

I think if you use KDM, root is not allowed. Can you try to switch your
session to GNOME (see session at bottom of login screen) and see if you
can login.

That's the modern default, but there's no reason you need to leave it
that way. The AllowRootLogin line in kdmrc is what controls it.

From point of security and system integrity (not risking system damage
by faulty actions) there is a very good reason to not graphically login
into X as root. The tasks which need root privileges can easily be
achieved by "su -" or "sudo".

True, true -- the gdm and related kdm configuration files both have
this setting.

You've received some advice on *how* to login as root, graphically.

May I ask *why* you want to log in as root, graphically? This isn't
Windows -- it's never necessary here, and a click in the wrong place can
do a lot more damage as root.

Most graphical programs that are likely to need root privileges will ask
for the password when they start up. For the rest, it's a lot more sense
to go into a terminal,
su -
to a root prompt, and run just the program you need from there.

Or configure sudo, if you're going to do this regularly.

if you use 'kdm', then edit /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
open kdmrc with ur favourite editor and change the line 'AllowrootLogin
true'. its not true on default installation.
and if you use 'gdm', then edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
theres a similar line like above. just remove false, write true instead.
and from now on you can sign in as root ;)
