All for Db

So I rushed to my Fedora box trying to hum a tune into Audacity in Db
(D-flat) major ... only, I dont trust my sense of pitch.  So  I decided
to try a virtual keyboard to spot the Db frequency/pitch and was rather
disappointed that Ubuntu was getting all the packaged versions.  Bah!

Alright, I compiled one (VMPK) and got jack-keyboard from the repo.  The
only problem now is that I have no idea how to start jackd.  #jack forum
at freenode isn't helping much.  I couldnt even get a sound from ALSA in
VMPK.  HELP!

So much for Db and I think we need an active IRC channel

VMPK is available in fedora "sudo yum install vmpk" but it is only a 
MIDI keyboard, you will need to connect its MIDI out to a programs MIDI 
input in Jack, and route the Audio outputs of this program to your 
system outs.

Alternatively (easier) you could try installing yoshimi or ZynAddSubFx 
which both have built in keyboard.

Post the output of jack here and we'll go from there.

If you run alsa-info.sh from the command line and post the output it 
will help us determine what hardware you are using

While I look at the jack issue you can generate a tone through alsa/pulse

For Db you could try :

speaker-test -f 277.183 -t sine

This should work with pulseaudio running, otherwise you will have to 
specify the card with the -D parameter

In your case this should work

pulseaudio -k; speaker-test -f 277.183 -t sine -Dhw:0

for me it is

pulseaudio -k; speaker-test -f 277.183 -t sine -Dplughw:0,0

But would have to check with the jack developers to know for sure.
I wonder if dbus is running, does 'dbus-monitor' do anything? (Ctrl-C to exit).
Is this Fedora 18/Jam or an earlier version?

This patch should already be in 1.9.9.5.

Are you running jack as the normal (non-root) user?
