Low Latency vs. Real Time Kernel
by Brian Monroe
I've been spending a lot of time on the #opensourcemusicians channel
talking to Ubuntu Studio users about their kernel and latency times they're
getting. Seems like most of them are using g a stock kernel with the
preemptive option enabled and they are getting great latency results
(2ms)while utilizing the @audio group on their user. I ended up compiling
my own low latency kernel and I haven't had any issues with it yet. If this
is what we are missing for the spin I'd be happy to maintain packaging for
the kernel. I know ccrma has been behind a few kernel releases.
I saw the instructions for adding the real time patch for a tick less
kernel and from what I can tell it wouldn't be hard to get that rolling as
well.
I'm not entirely sure what ccrma does differently with their kernels
compared to other Linux users, and I'm still a bit of a noob so I could be
off base with this, but I would reason that we should be able to just
utilize the same settings to archive similar performance enhancements.
I thought I read that ccrma uses a unique scheduler, but if we could get a
2ms latency time without it, the point may be moot.

I'm going to have to decline a response for now, sorry.

Admittedly, the best I can do is "this keyboard looks very similar to
other keyboards of Brand X," and even at that I don't want to
embarrass myself in the permanent public record of THE INTERNET.

I'm all for ideas but, like everybody else, short on spare time. And
that's what we need right now... somebody with some spare time.
Christopher.

Ingen
by Martin Tarenskeen
Hi,
After installing a whole bunch of dependencies - many from fedora, a few
from SVN sources - I managed to compile and install the stuff from
svn co http://svn.drobilla.net/lad/trunk drobilla-lad
And now have working versions of, among others, Ingen and all the MDA
effect and synth plugins on my Fedora systems. To be able to build Ingen I
also had to get the SVN version of LV2. Even the official Fedora version
wasn't new enough. I don't think the official Fedora repo's should be
filled with hardly tested alpha and beta development versions from SVN or
GIT or whatever. IMO this is already happening too often.
That doesn't mean I do not like to experiment. I am having a lot of fun
with Ingen. For example I can combine the MDA synths DX10 and JX10 with
all kinds of filters and effects to create really fat or weird sounds.
I do get crashes once in a while - that's part of the game if you want to
experiment.
Also I found, compiled, and tried a nice little LV2 bass-synth called
"minaton". Could be a nice candidate for Fedora also.
Anyway: after being a "promising and improved" alternative to DSSI and
LADSPA only in theory for years, now it looks like LV2 is slowly growing
to something that is actively supported by developers and actually usable
for users.
Nice to see more and more LV2 stuff showing up in Fedora, and there is
more of it waiting!

Looking for volunteers
by Brendan Jones
Hey all
I'm looking for a volunteer to take on the visual requirements of the
spin from now until release.
My packaging backlog is getting a bit crazy. Whilst I'd love some more
help in this area, I also think this is a great opportunity for the more
visually minded members of the list to contribute.
I've tried garnering support for this aspect of the spin but it is
really hard - frankly that's surprised me. I've also tried to enlist the
support of the design team but thus far that has also come up with nichts.
Where both design nor packaging interests you, Christopher Antilla also
needs some bodys to upate the Fedora Musicians guide. I'm sure he will
be able to point you in the right direction.
So this is a call out to those who are eagerly anticipating the audio
spin, but have no interest in packaging or playing with kickstarts etc
to step forward and take this on. We don't have much time before
release, so we really need to start now (no I'm not nervous :{ )
For reference here's what Jorn and I have posted on the designs list:

Fedora Jam Themes

Hi:
Final new topic for today.
Did we manage to come up with any desktop themes? If not, we should still
do something distinctive, and again I suggest the "Caledonia" themes that
are available on kdelook.org
Christopher.
