Bizarre CUPS printing behavior.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
I am having a problem so bizarre that in my mind that I don't where to
search for the answer. Maybe someone has an idea.
As of last night I had a cups print server that could print to all of
our printers and also support printing to the printers from a print
client.
All of the printers were configured through the web interface. Late
this morning I looked at the list of printers using the cups web
interface and found the following:
1. All the printer displays said configuration of the printer should
be done with system-config-printer.
2. The configuration had been changed on the server so that all of the
drivers to these HP printers had been changed to Raw Driver. For the Postscript
printers postscript files could be printed but text not. Yesterday
text, postscript and pdf files could be printed.
3. For each printer displayed on the server the description field had
been erased and replaced with the statement that that the entry was
configured by redhat-config-printer.
4. No browsing is occurring nor can the client print. If you try you
get an error : lpr: error - unable to print file:
server-error-service-unavailable
Which makes sense since there are no printers appearing in the CUPS
web interface for the client.
The server is FC3 and the client is FC4. I am beginning to believe in
computer ghosts. I have working with computers for nearly 50 years and
have never been more frustrated.
Ideas anyone?

FC4 and hostname
by Truls Gulbrandsen
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,
I have FC4 installed incl. the most resent updates on an IBM TP30.
I am trying to give the PC a new name using 'hostname'. It works in a
way but after having entered the command I am unable to load 'terminal'
and 'network'.
I go alt-crtl-f1 and log in and find that the new name is the, when
exiting I find the 'terminal'window open.
I have done the same operation on this machine running FC3 with the most
resent updates (an IBM TP23) and works fine.
Anyone with a solution to this problem?

FC4 Apache problem.
by Robert Cahn
I'm trying to start up a web site. Following the docs i put the
following little file in /var/www/cgi-bin
#!/usr/bin/perl
print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";
print "Hello, World.";
I made it executable and Apache (running as localhost) won't run it.
If I cd into /var/www/cgi-bin and execute ./first.pl it fails. If I
execute perl ./first.pl it works. What do I need to do to enable this
file in cgi-bin?

I could only find <http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/CIS/UNIX/TeX/psfig.html>,
which talks about documentstyle, so quite old.
As Mr Normolle points out 2.09 is ancient and RedHat 9 uses the same
LaTex.
\documentstyle[option,...]{type}
has been replaced by:
\documentclass{type}
\usepackage{option}
...
Is that what you're doing? I also note that my MikTeX (Windows atm)
doesn't have psfig installed by default, nor is it in the LaTeX users
guide. Is there any reason you can't use the graphicx package instead?
(This appears to have superseeded the graphics package mentioned in
the LaTeX user's guide 2nd edition, psfig is nowhere mentioned in that
book)
Am I misunderstanding the use of psfig? I would do:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
\include{somepicture} % where somepicture.eps (for latex) or
% somepicture.pdf (for pdflatex) exists
\include{somepicture.eps} % although pdflatex will choke
\include{somepicture.png} % etc, different formats are available
% depending whether you're doing latex
% or pdflatex
\end{document}
I'd guess from your use of it that psfig is an old package for
backwards compatibility. Try and get hold of a copy of the 2nd
edition users guide (specifically section 7.2) and where it says
`graphics' read `graphicx'. Otherwise I would suggest searching
on google for `latex graphicx'.

cpu frequency scaling
by Josh Coffman
Hi all,
Can anyone post some info or link on configuring
the cpuspeed daemon that comes with FC4. It's working,
but only with two steps: 50% and 100%. .. My cpu says
8 steps are available, but I don't know what
frequencies I can configure. Also, when I try to edit
available_scaling_frequencies, I get an error that the
file is READONLY. (I tried echo -n, vi, and gedit all
as root.)
I'd also like to know more about the governor
modes. I was getting help setting up powernowd, but I
could quite get it to work. (Mostly because I'm a
noob, I'm sure.)
TIA,
-j

Basically all I did was a minimal install, downloaded j2sdk1.4.2_08 from
sun's site. Added a few scripts to it, and did an rpmbuild -bb.
