File System for USB Disk?
by James Pifer
I have 160 gig hard disk installed in a USB 2 enclosure.
What is the best file system to put on it?
It would be nice to be able to plug it into both Linux and Windows
machines. Obviously NTFS is not an option. Windows can't read linux
drives. So what does that leave me with?
Linux is my primary choice, so I put ext3 on it using qtparted.
When I plug it into my laptop, the light on the usb enclosure flashes,
but I don't see anything under /media. Is there any way to force a
refresh? /etc/fstab has this:
/dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk ext3
pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
Once I get that working, how do I deal with permissions since my userid
will not be able to write to it? Should I give my userid ownership of
/media/usbdisk? Will those permissions "stick" when I remove and plug
the drive in again?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
James

No "Minimal Install" in text mode FC4
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I tried to install FC 4 on a old system and I just want it minimal install. I
boot using CDs and type "linux askmethod text" to install text-mode using
NFS. Then I chose Custom Install. But during the package selection, I
couldn't find "Minimal Install". This is strange. You would thing that people
who install in Text mode want minimal install.. rather than Everyhing (which
is listed in the package group). Or am I missing somehting ?
Thanks.

FC4 Installation Problem
by Bisi
I have an IBM xSeries 240 server and installed FC4.
Installation failed with the error message "Crash with
S3 Trio video card: KeyError: 'S3 Trio3D\nS3 Trio64".
My system information reports that the machine has S3
Inc. Trio3D video card.
Following suggestion in bug# 157972 I reinstlled FC4
using 'headless' option. I finally got the
installation done in text mode. Then I ran kudzu to
configure the hardware. However kudzu comes back with
error message: Error creating netlink socket
(Permission denied). I then ran
"system-config-display". Once I set all the necessary
option including display resolution card type and
Exit, the display just got messed up with
red-blue-green lines covering the whole screen. At
this point, nothing is visible again.
I will appreciate any help I can get to resolve this
problem.
Bisi

Ping and firewall
by Edward Dekkers
I have a rule in my firewall's INPUT chain to drop incoming ICMP.
The net result of this is that when I'm testing, and I ping outwards,
the echoes don't come back.
The rule looks like this:
echo " Dropping ICMP from outside"
$IPTABLES -A INPUT -i $EXTIF -p icmp -j DROP
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -j LOG
On the forward chain I have this:
echo " FWD: Allow all connections OUT and only existing and related
ones IN"
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i $EXTIF -o $INTIF -m state --state
ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i $INTIF -o $EXTIF -j ACCEPT
Can something similar be done for ICMP? i.e. allow echo ICMP packets
back in only if I've pinged somebody?
Regards,
Ed.

RE: USB Printer and Firefox

What happens if you restart the cups daemon after plugging in the printer ?
Open a terminal and type (as root) service cups restart (or maybe
it's service cupsd restart ..I can't remeber and I'm not near an FC
machine.
You may need to restart firefox too, but you shouldn't need to reboot.
If there's no printer plugged in (or it's turned off) when you start
firefox, it just gives you the option postscript/default, even if you
plug in/turn on the printer later. This may also work if the printer
you have is set as default, but I couldn't be sure.
HTH.

help on latex
by Pushparaj Shetty
I have Fedora Core. I tried to run latex.
I used psfig for including figures. It gave the following mesage:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New documents should use Standard LaTeX conventions and start
with the \documentclass command.
Compatibility mode is UNLIKELY TO WORK with LaTeX 2.09 style
files that change any internal macros, especially not with
those that change the FONT SELECTION or OUTPUT ROUTINES.
Therefore such style files MUST BE UPDATED to use
Current Standard LaTeX: LaTeX2e.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
kindly tell me how do I get the latest version of Latex (2.09) in Fedora

How to play streaming ogg in Firefox 1.0.6-1.1.fc3? .
by Brad Alpert
Using kernel 2.6.11-1.35_FC3smp, all known plugins installed for gxine,
mplayer, helixplayer, xmms, etc. Contents
of /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.6/plugins:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 16635 Aug 2 06:34 gxineplugin.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 67 Aug 1 16:14 libjavaplugin_oji.so -
> /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_08/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 16304 Jul 20 11:54 libnullplugin.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 26320 Aug 2 06:35 mozplugger.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 233614 Aug 2 06:29 mplayerplug-in.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 40608 Aug 2 06:28 nphelix.so
In Firefox, what I want to do is to be able to click on a file located
on a website with a name like "this_song.ogg" and have Firefox render
streaming sound.
This works fine with .mp3's (using the mplayer plugin) but with an ogg
file, the mplayer plugin displays "buffering" and "playing" while data
flies, but no music is produced.
Am I asking the impossible? I have searched all over for help on this
problem but nothing that directly addresses a solution.
Thanks!

Please help me--a problem about compiling kernel
by Leo
Hi, everyone. I have installed F.C.3 on VMware successfully. Now I want to
compile my own kernel-2.6.10. I have tried many times. At first, I could
compile and install it successfully but could not boot from it, I guess I
missed something. Sometime when I compile the kernel, it displayed no enough
space, so I add a new IDE harddisk (emulated by VMware), mount it and it
works well. But I can not compile kernel now. When I run "make
modules_install", after many lines "INSTALL ******", it will stop at the
line "if -r System.map if" (sorry I can not remember the detail clearly),
and the OS becomes no responding, I have to reboot it.
If I skip "make modules_install", just "make install", it is the same
result.
I have tried to re-install FC3, the problem is still there.
Please tell me what's up? How to fix it? Thanks.
My harddisk config:
/dev/hda1 ext3 / 4.0G
/dev/hdb1 ext3 /usr 3.9G
/dev/hdb2 swap 0.1G
