WPA2 for Intel 2915ABG?

I have a laptop running FC4 and with the Intel 2915ABG chip, lspci says: 06:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG MiniPCI Adapter (rev 05) I want to connect to a Linksys WRT55AG wireless router, it supports both 802.11a and 802.11b+g and WEP/WPA for security. There is already a large number of active 802.11b+g access points in my area so using 802.11a only would be the best choice. In addition it would be nice to use WPA and not WEP for encryption. The ipw2200-firmware-2.2-0.lvn.2.4.noarch.rpm package from Livna has been installed. Without encryption the connection works very well, though strangely Fedora seems unable to see ("iwlist eth1 scanning") 802.11a traffic unless 802.11b+g is activated also. There seems to be no obvious way to select 802.11a only using iwconfig or system-config-network. Anyone know if 802.11a is even supported or what the trick is? WEP encryption also work, though Linksys seems to think that 128 bits == 104 bits The real problem is getting WPA to work, using what is called AES encryption by Linksys. Is this at all supported by the IPW2200 driver? Modinfo says that the FC4 version of ipw2200 is 1.0.0, while the version at Sourceforge is 1.0.6. From the release notes it seems that many bugs have been fixed since the 1.0.0 release. It is likely that installing the upgraded driver will help? -psi

SATA install - 'No driver Found'

Dear LazyWeb, I am trying to install FC4 on my squeeky new Intel D945GNT board with SATA drive. But after a few dialog boxes in I am presented with a dialog box that says 'Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type.', with a couple of buttons to either manually select a driver type or to supply a driver disk. I get this weather the BIOS is setup up as IDE or AHCI. I have tried a few SATA drivers, to no avail. From this page, http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html, I have tried option 1 (as listed above) and I am not setup to do option 2. So, is option 3 for me? Does any one know the skinny to get this install completed? And how do I determine what SATA chipset I have (such as, Intel ICH5 SATA-I) which might explain why option 1 does not work. Empty USB hard drive shows 81% full

I have emptied the trash, run "sync" and rebooted. $ sudo ls -la /media/SHUTTLE total 12 drwxr-xr-x 2 guy staff 4096 Dec 31 1969 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Sep 23 17:04 .. $ df -h /media/SHUTTLE Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 5.3G 4.3G 1.1G 81% /media/SHUTTLE I put the drive in a windows box and it indicates that the drive is in fact empty [5.3G Available]. What's up with that?

Fedora Core 4 Upgrade from Core 3 fails with Swap File Error

I have a good working Core3 system which I would like to upgrade to Core4. I am upgrading from a tested DVD. When I get to the upgrade check part, it offers to upgrade. There is only one Core 3 listed /dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 When I click next, I get the following message: Error enabling swap device VolGroup00/LogVol01: No such file or directory The /etc/fstab on your upgrade partition does not reference a valid swap partition Press OK to reboot your system. missing/removed fonts

I recently noted that the times family of fonts seems to have been removed from the default install. I have several documents that were written using the times new roman fonts when I was using FC3. When updating them recently (on FC4) I find that the entire times font family has been removed. (My system is fully updated FC4.) Does anyone have pointers on where to get and how to restore the removed fonts? I have seen several threads on fonts here, but usually related to adding extra fonts for use in wine or similar. /etc/fonts/local.conf - oblique and italics

I was poking around my system, and I notices that Acrobat Reader for x86 has some rather nice otf fonts in it - of particular interest - CourierStd-BoldOblique.otf CourierStd-Bold.otf CourierStd-Oblique.otf CourierStd.otf They look nicer imho than Courier New from the ms coreweb fonts, and they have been updated to include the Euro (I don't believe Courier New from ms coreweb has, and none of those fonts will be updated since MS ended the program.) I know how to tell the local.conf file to use Courier Std when Courier New is specified in a document, but I don't know how to tell it to use Oblique member of the family when italic member is specified. The problem comes when printing a document (ie to file or paper), xft seems to make a fake italic which is good enough for screen (but doesn't print at all). Any suggestions?

sshd won't start on FC4

I installed a fresh, minimal install of FC4 (picked Custom install, and left out all extras). For some reason, sshd won't start. The logs show: sshd[2658]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. After some Googling, it seems that IPV6 is to blame, and adding "AddressFamily inet" to /etc/ssh/sshd_config, seems to do the trick. Someone said that it fails because it's trying to bind to port 22 on IPV4 and IPV6 addresses, though I don't know enough about how that works to confirm or deny that possibility. I find it extremely difficult to believe that sshd wouldn't work out of the box for on Fedora, but I also don't see anything wrong with how I installed it. I'm coming from a FreeBSD background, and I'm used to these things just working. Am I missing something here? Thanks, Patrick

Whatever happened to KOffice?

KOffice seems to have disappeared from Fedora-4, though it was in Fedora-3, IIRC. I'm looking for it because I was reading about OASIS, the OpenDocument format, and it seems that this more or less requires one to use either OpenOffice or KOffice. OpenOffice is more or less unusable on my fairly ancient laptop, as it takes for ever to start up. RPM error with PGP 6.5.8 installation

Hello all, While trying to install PGP 6.5.8 cmd line RPM (downloaded from http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/unix/6.5.8/) , I'm getting the following error: root@c7504s98 /usr/local/downloads/PGP$ rpm -Uvh PGPcmdln_6.5.8_Lnx_FW.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libstdc++.so.2.8 is needed by pgp-6.5.8-rsaref658 I googled on this and found some tips to ln -s the current version (libstdc++.so.5.0.5) to libstdc++.so.2.8 but that doesn't work too. I'm not too sure what the lib files are used for, but it seems that the 5.0.5 would be newer than the 2.8. Any help/tips/pointers appreciated! Faisal

Failed FC4 SATA Install

Hi All, I'm trying to do my first FC4 install on a SATA drive/machine. All is not going well. I have been right through the installation several times, with various combinations of automatic and manual disc partitioning schemes, but they all seem to bomb out with the following logs: F3: * moving (1) to step fixupconditionals * moving (1) to step checkdeps * moving (1) to step confirminstall F4: <6>kjournald starting.
