SMP enabled on UP kernel
by mostafa.afgani@world.iu-bremen.de
Dear all,
After the last kernel update (2.6.15-1.1831_FC4) the rt2500 (RaLink
WiFi) driver is causing the system to freeze on modprobe -- on
restarting the PC the boot process hangs and hence renders the machine
unusable.
A post on the rt2x00 driver forum led me to the information that SMP is
enabled even on single processor FC kernels (at least from 2.6.15 on). I
just though it must be a mistake and dutifully filed a BUG report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=182640
But, within minutes of posting the report, I got a reply that the it is
NOTABUG & CLOSED! The reason provided was "The performance loss from
running SMP on a UP x86_64 machine is negligable."
Now, what I don't understand is what good is SMP on a UP kernel?? If I
want SMP, I'll install the SMP kernel. I assume I'm not the only one who
needs to run a UP kernel to make certain hardware work that won't
otherwise work with SMP! Someone please tell me why anyone would want
SMP enabled on UP kernels?
If this is the way it's going to be then I'll have no other choice than
to recompile every new kernel that is released... and I really hope it
doesn't come to that...
Your comments please.

Removing the offending MAXTOR DDO(?) allowed Ghost to do the
parition to partition copy and the drive boots! The only
downside I encountered was that I had to disconnect/reconnect
to the domain controller and re-setup the users for this disk.

FC4 --> FC5T3. Via nfs from dvd iso. Howto bootstrap install.
by Nat Gross
Basic question, folks.
Machines A and B, both FC4.
A is the one I want to upgrade to FC5.
B has the dvd iso image in /nfs and is exported. (checksum ok.)
A currently has B:/nfs mounted in /mnt/B.
A can currently browse the iso ok.
Question: How do I get the show on the road.
Thanks;

Need Recommendation for RAID Monitoring Software
by Matthew J. Roth
List users,
We are running Fedora Core 3 on multiple Dell PowerEdge servers. Each
machine has an onboard LSI Logic PERC 4e/Si RAID controller, megaraid
drivers (2.20), and two SCSI disks configured in a RAID 1 (mirrored).
As part of our backup routine, we pull out a drive from each machine and
swap in a new one. The pulled drives are stored as backups, and the
mirrors are rebuilt on the new disks.
This has been working well for us, but we have not been able to find
software that allows us to monitor the rebuild. The only ways that we
can tell when it is complete are by monitoring the drive activity lights
or by rebooting the server and going into the RAID controller's firmware
utility. The first method is error-prone and the second method is not a
valid option, because we need to keep the machines available during the
rebuild.
I'm fairly certain that there is Dell software for RAID monitoring from
the OS, but it is Windows specific. I would greatly appreciate it if
someone could recommend a text-mode software package for FC3 that offers
the same functionality as well as the ability to monitor the RAIDs for
disk failures.
Thank you,
Matthew Roth

Printer went away (FC2)
by Mike McCarty
I installed HPLIP, but found that the "extra" functions do not
operate with my printer, so uninstalled it.
I can no longer use my printer. I tried printing a test page,
using GNOME print manager, and nothing came out. I got this as part of
the error log.

I [21/Feb/2006:22:11:31 -0600] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug"
to find out more.
I do not know how to set the LogLevel to "debug", nor how to debug this
problem.
# /etc/init.d/cups status
cupsd (pid 3609) is running...
So the problem is not just cups.

F17 in Konsole
by Paul Lemmons
OK, I give up. This is probably a trivial question but I have exhausted
my resources hunting for it.
I have an application that, when run, gets to a point and asks me to
press "F17" to continue. I am using Knonsole and I have tried every
combination of keys that would make sense to send an "F17" (and a few
that did not make sense) with no cheese down any hole. I am clearly
missing something. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hard disk drivers at bootup with new kernel (Phillip)
by Phillip
So far no luck. forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=89538 caries an
identical problem. Our boot screen shows the following:
SCSI subsystem initialized
Loading sd_mod.ko module
Loading jbd.ko module
Loading ext3.ko module
Creating root device
mkrootdev: label / not found
Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
Switching to new root
ERROR opening /dev/console!!!!: 2
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 0
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 1
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 2
unmounting old /proc
unmountin old /sys
switchroot: mount failed: 22
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
[and some trace info]
We have only a binary driver for the controllers. Moving to the
appropriate modules directory for the new kernel does not work
For other suggestions:
yes -- SCSI
yes -- raid
yes -- have aliases in /etc/modprobe.conf for both controllers
yes -- we have tried mkinitrd but it cannot find the .ko driver with or
without full path name and using the --with parameter.
More suggestions?

gnome 2.12
by lostson
Hello
I am curious as to why gnome 2.12 was not added as an update. Why wait until
FC5 comes out and then we might get 2.14 but with the release schedule the
way it is I don't really count on that either.
