Fonts on Fedora 8
by Erich Zigler
Since Fedora 8 no longer utilizes XFS what is the proper way to setup
the fonts in Xorg? Should I specify everything in FontPaths?
Thanks,
Erich

boot cd's
by Frank Cox
I do my Fedora installs and upgrades by booting off of a CDR and doing a
NFS install from the DVD image that I have on my fileserver.
Is there a difference (other than the logo screen) between the boot cd images
for Fedora versions? In other words, can I use my F7 boot cd to install F8, or
am I better off to create a new CD from the image on the F8 dvd?

Fedora 8, Atheros card, so close
by SternData
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

The Live CD recognizes the Atheros based D-Link card in my PC. Way to go!
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be able to authenticate with my access
point using 128 bit WEP with a hex key.
The card has been working with F7 and madwifi.

f8 won't install on inspiron 6000 laptop
by Alexander Volovics
An auspicious begin with fedora 8 :(
1) Tried installing f8 on i6000 using Fedora-8-i386-DVD.iso.
Install gets no further than 'running /sbin/loader'
Nothing further happens.
2) Tried installing f8 on i6000 using Fedora-8-Live-i686.iso.
Everything seems to go allright, albeit a bit 'fast'.
Strange popups of an empty '/boot' window underway and later
of another window with blue icons (I didn't take note of
what). No message that '/' was being formatted, only a
message for '/boot'. Finished with message that everything
was installed. No postinstall configuration (so no user)
and cd was not ejected.
Very nice.
I checked the DVD and CD, both allright.
F8 test 3 was on the laptop and had installed with no problems!

[OT] Looking for a notebook
by Joe Tseng
I've been asked to look for notebooks for my office that have built-in
serial ports. We've already used USB-to-serial adapters and port
multipliers with mixed success; we are kind of leery of using PCMCIA serial
ports. And we'd like to use these notebooks on the go so docks are out of
the question. Can I get the big OEMs to sell me a few of these or am I out
of luck with them?

iptables generic INPUT rule
by Joe Tseng
I recall seeing an example rule where the person allowed all established
connections; it went something like this:
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
Is this a safe generic rule to have? Or is it better for me to state every
case explicitly?

yum depository
by Karl Larsen
I have livina turned on here on F7 but I have not been able to turn
it on for F7-64 or F8. Please tell me again how that is done. In the man
yum they allude to doing it but I can't seem to understand. I need this
to get all the non fedora things I need to enjoy my computer :-)

Sandisk Sansa c250
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello, Everyone
I just purchased a Sandisk Sansa c250. The only problem is that it is
real picky about id3 tags. All of my mp3's were recently re-tagged
using Easytag. The c250 proceeds to lump them all as "Unknown Artist"
and "Unknown Album." I then figured out that if I remove all the tags,
and just tag the album and the artist thusly:
id3tag -2 --album="Dancing In Jerusalem" --artist="Lamb" *.mp3
that such mp3's are accessible by the Album or the Artist. Since I
know VERY little about regular expressions and shell scripts, I am
rather unwilling to tag the track names and track numbers with id3tag.
Hence the other problem, using the above referenced mp3's as an example:
The above mp3's sort under "Lamb" as the artist and "Dancing In
Jerusalem" as the album. But, since I have not set the track numbers,
the mp3's appear to be listed in random order :( I will set the track
numbers for the above example just for fun to see what happens... The
result was not good. The files still sort in random order.
If any of you have had the same issue with this exact same model, or
one made by the same company, I would like to hear your successes and
your failures.
Also, if any of you are using any kind of mp3 player that does not make
you jump through hoops like this just to get your mp3's sorted
correctly, I would like to know that as well.
Thank you,
Steven P. Ulrick
