It may be as simple as making the vg and lv available. Do a pvscan and lvscan. When you see the volume group, do a "vgchange -a your_vol_groupname". This will make the lv available in /dev/your_vol_groupname/your_lv_name. You can then mount it or use forensic tools to try to extract. nfs mount : time-out error

Hi all, On one of my FC6 machines I have a problem with the nfs server: when a remote machine tries to mount one of the filesystems on the FC6 machine it takes a long while and than it gets a time-out error. What can be the problem? I already checked the following: - The remote machine is allowed to mount the filesystem - The used mount command is OK since it works without problems with another FC6 machine - The firewall settings are OK - with nfswatch I see the mount command on the FC6 machine. New install of FC6, httpd won't start at boot

httpd fails at boot with no message as to why it failed. I run ]# service httpd start and get Starting httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 170 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_access.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_access.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [FAILED] I committed the line and the same thing happened on the next line. Someone said that mod_access.so does not exist from FC5 on so why is this in the conf file if that is correct? I don't know what else to check to get httpd to start. ESR: Goodbye Fedora

This is certainly not my experience. yum is super; rpm works great. Once in a while it is necessary to yum clean all and then the dependencies DO get updated, but normally updates occur without a hitch. Multimedia is super: just get the essential package from mplayer and get the livna extras packages. As a backup, there's always rpmforge, but I admit that I haven't used any of their packages in Fedora 6, because livna has become more reliable. The strict stance on open source and free is excellent. Law and order. Tolerate no nonsense. Right on! Fedora has 5 CDs and sometimes debian's got a program I want. Maybe we'd better go to 6 to get them all! kubuntu's no viable option. That is, change your {system ("DOMAIN="...} to a print statement. You then execute the command created by your awk script in the calling shell's environment. Something along the lines of: foo = `awk '{FS=":"}{printf "export DOMAIN=%s\n", $1}' < /etc/passwd` `echo $foo` After the above, $DOMAIN should have the value you want for the *last entry* in /etc/passwd. Not sure if this is what you really want. That may be: foo=`awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} $1 ~ /'$USER'/ {printf "export DOMAIN=%s\n", $1}' /etc/passwd` `echo $foo` You'll find understanding quoting and order of execution is really useful when writing this kind of shell script. ;-) Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n. I love cutting and pasting to and from my xterm. This time however I cut and pasted a preceding space from the directory name I was trying to rm -fr. Thus I ended up doing rm -fr ./ mydir. Goodbye home dir. I quickly shut down and imaged the hard drive onto another server. Doing a little research I discovered I could mount the image using a loopback device. I wanted to try running foremost or some other tool to see what I could recover. I got the loopback working and can see all the partitions in the image. Since its a volume managed device I'm now stuck. I can see the partitions but I can't think of how to get around the lvm part to mount them and see the actual contents. I'm not that lvm proficient quite yet. Does anybody have any hits? Anybody maybe have some experience making this type of mistake and have some advice on trying to recover the data from it? And yes, I am now in the process of implementing a backup system :( TIA - Tod

sendmail

Im running Fedora Core 6 with sendmail, procmail, openldap and uw-imap installed. Sendmail is configure with openldap for mail and user accounts. Most of my users check their mail through horde and imp webmail which works well. However, a few users use Mozilla Thunderbird email client. When they are inside my network they can send and recieve emails no problem. When they go home they are unable to send emails. The mail client keeps asking for username and password. Im thinking that my pam module for smtp isnt configured correctly to grab the username and passwords from my ldap directory. But I cant quite put my finger on the issue. Im not seeing anything weird in my logfiles. I actually tried sending an email from thunderbird while watching my secure logs and nothing happens. But Mozilla comes back with wanting username and password again. Anyone using anything close to my mailserver setup?
