Xeon Core 5130 couldn't support full-virtualization?
by Zhen Zhou
Hi, lists,
Now I dive the sea of xen, I took a Dell 2950 Server, install FC 6 i386 on it,
I refer some documents about Xen:
http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraXenQuickstartFC6
So i checked as following:
1. check Intel VM for host CPU, it works, it showed me:
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca
cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx lm
constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl vmx tm2 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm
2. check hvm-??, then I have no luck. even I enable virtualization in BIOS.
so how could I enable fully-virtualizied in this server? or should I
install x86_64 for it?
Because this server CPU is Intel Xeon Core 5130 serial.
Thanks a lot,
Zhou Zhen

compiz and scim are fighting for my keyboard
by Sam Varshavchik
Compiz uses CTRL-ALT-arrows to switch virtual desktops.
scim's default configuration uses CTRL-ALT-arrows to switch input methods.
Who gets the bug? I'm leaning towards compiz for two reasons:
1) scim appears to have seniority. compiz is a relative newcomer.
2) although scim's keys are customizable, compiz's are not. compiz needs to
be more configurable.

The regular class videos are accessable only from within the
university, but as I understand it the test cases should be accessable
from outside. I've no no way to verify that, though. It wouldn't
surprise me if the server was down. Again. :) That's what happens when
they try to run a server on a Microsoft operating system :)
On Sunday (a regular week day here) I'll give it another shot, using
the methods described in the article linked by Nigel. Assuming that
the server is operational by then. In the meantime, I'm still open for
advice. Thanks!

fglrx question
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Warning, fglrx newbie here. I've been running the kernels radeon drivers
for the last 3 years since my last nvidia card took a crap and took the
motherboard with it.
I've downloaded and installed the current ati drivers for my third party
(VisionTek I think) ati 9200SE 128mb card.
Unforch, its running at about 1/4 the speed I can get from the kernels
radeon drivers.
kernel is 2.6.20-ck1, ati-agp and nvidia-agp are compiled in but this made
no difference. There is also an ati-agp module loaded according to
lsmod.
DRM and DRI refuse to initialize. So the Xorg.0.log has this:

The question is what kernel module?
The /etc/X11/xorg.conf was generated with 'aticonfig --initial' from a tty
console. I've added drm and ati-agp to the Load Modules section, no
difference.
The gzipped .config for this kernel is attached.
What else would it be helpfull to post in an attempt to troubleshoot this?

I'm not certain that there's much Fedora can do about that. AFAIK, legal MP3
playback requires a license. For a community supported distro, I'm not sure if this
is feasible and even if it were, it may disagree with some of the fundamental tenets
of Free software. To his point about compromising ideals for end-user convenience,
I'm in disagreement.

Here too... MP3s are nice, but it's not something that is a show-stopper for me or
anyone that I've helped with Linux. I.e., if MP3 playback is important enough then
it's a relatively simple matter to install the software. A rough equivalent would be
WinZIP. It doesn't ship with Windows, but is a quick install. Same for SSH clients,
editors, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash/Shockwave, Quicktime, and a host of other
proprietary codecs.

True, I'll agree here. I haven't upgraded FC or RH in a long time as I generally do
scratch installs. My boxes, once the distro is loaded, usually get heavily modified
with all sorts of packages so it may be unrealistic in my case to have an upgrade
work smoothly. My /home is separate so it's not too big a deal.

I'd agree that FC on a server is not the best choice, though I run my own
web/dns/file/ldap on FC5 or FC6 currently. Being a lazy admin though, FC fits me
pretty well.
You raise some good points and if you'd written the same thing that the gasbag had
mailbombed the world with, I'd probably have read more attentively :P

Re: How to upgrade from RH8 to FC? Is it safe?

Your best bet would be to back up any user data and do a clean install.
Since you're still running RH8, you might do better with a RHEL clone
like CentOS that emphasizes stability over "cutting edge."
If I remember correctly, the main difference between RH8 and RH9 was gcc
moving from 2.x to 3.0. This meant that all RH8 binaries were
potentially incompatible with the RH9 kernel. RH8 was primarily a
"revenue release" since it really didn't include anything new above
RH7.3. It probably should have been RH7.4 but then nobody would have
bought it. Current FC releases use gcc 4.1.1.
Bottom line is any custom binaries you had for RH8 will at least need to
be recompiled for Fedora. Any "standard" programs have probably changed
so much or evolved to something different that it's very doubtful that
many settings, rc files, etc. will come forward. Figure out what things
you need to re-implement, copy them off and then do a clean install.
Cheers,
Dave

What's up with the latest aci updates
by Mark Haney
I posted a problem with FC6 and kacpid going berserk in one of my
desktops just after the upgrade from FC5 a while back and didn't see any
ideas on what's causing the problem. It seems FC6 isn't starting my
cooling fan. Which isn't a huge problem since that entire room is temp
controlled and that's not a heavily used machine.
A little while later a new update seemed to fix the problem, although
the fan still didn't come on, kacpid didn't peg the crap out of my cpu.
Now,with the latest update, it's back to the same problem kacpid is just
beating this system apart and nothing I've done has fixed it. Does
anyone have any ideas one what's happening?

What is the proper way to restart udev?
by Steven W. Orr
I found /sbin/udevstart but there is no udevstop. Can I kill -1 the
running udevd, or do I kill -9 the udevd followed by a udevstart, or do I
have to reboot?
