Polemic is also the word that can be used to describe your original post. "Cast not stones, ye who in glass houses live"

Best mount options for external USB ext3 disk drive
by Chris Jones
Hi,
I have an external USB ext3 disk drive. Everything is working fine, I plug it
in an an icon appears on my (KDE) desktop, which I can use to mount and
unmount the device.
However, I have noticed that writing to the device the behaviour is rather
different to my main system disks. It appears not much caching is going on -
On the main system when creating a large file, the writes a done in big bulks
every now and then, whereas on this disk it is continuous low level activity.
I'm wondering if this is normal for a USB disk, or are there options I can
teak somewhere to get better mounting ?
jonesc@localhost ~ > mount
/dev/hda7 on / type ext3 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/hda5 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
/dev/hda10 on /data type ext3 (rw)
/dev/hda6 on /data2 type ext3 (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/hda8 on /home type ext3 (rw)
/dev/hda2 on /winxp type ntfs (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,umask=000)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
AFS on /afs type afs (rw)
/dev/sda1 on /media/MassStorage type ext3
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,data=ordered)
The last one is the USB disk, mounted via HAL. Is this optimal ?
cheers Chris

Cannot set display resolution above 800x600
by JUSTIN TAYLOR
I recently had to re-install FC6. Now my 17" CRT that I have always ran at
1024x760 can only be set at 800x600 or 640x480. I have looked high and low
but cannot find the source of the problem.
What do I need to do to restore my original resolution?

How about RH8 to RH 9 then FC? Is it possible?

3ware RAID selinux smartd
by Kevin H. Hobbs
We recently set up a fancy file server running Fedora core 6 with a
3ware 9550SX raid controller. As far as I can tell the correct line
in /etc/smartd.conf to monitor the 5th disk looks like this:
/dev/twa0 -d 3ware,4 -H -m root
The device /dev/twa0 was not automatically created, but only showed up
when I ran tw_cli from 3ware. Once the device exists I can run
smartctl :
[kevin@backup ~]$ sudo /usr/sbin/smartctl /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,4 -H
smartctl version 5.36 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED
But when start smartd I get a SELinux message for each disk, and smartd
cannot access the disk. This is what I see in /var/log/messages :
Feb 28 13:42:27 backup kernel: audit(1172688147.177:55): avc: denied { getattr } for pid=3099 comm="smartd" name="twa0" dev=tmpfs
ino=111017 scontext=user_u:system_r:fsdaemon_t:s0 tcontext=user_u:object_r:device_t:s0 tclass=chr_file
Feb 28 13:42:27 backup smartd[3099]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_04], File exists, open() failed
Feb 28 13:42:27 backup smartd[3099]: Unable to register ATA device /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_04] at line 7 of file /etc/smartd.conf
Feb 28 13:42:27 backup smartd[3099]: Device /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_04] not available
How do I have the system create the device for the controller
automatically on startup with the correct security context for the smart
daemon?

Eclipse running out of memory, or..?
by Frode Petersen
I have a problem that I've tried to figure out, but without much progress.
I run Fedora Eclipse with an UML plugin. Very often Eclipse seems to be
stuck in some sort of loop where the java VM is using appr. 50% CPU
(dual core = 100% of one core?). The result is that Eclipse shuts down
after a few minutes. (This happens with ArgoEclipse and Omondo
EclipseUML Community Edition)
I have found some advice suggesting I should try to increase the VM's
memory, but they use flags with the java... command used to run the
normal Eclipse. I have not figured out how to do this with Fedora Eclipse.
FC6 x86_64, SunJDK 1.5
I'll be greatful for some pointers...
