Updated packages (php, mysql and probably alot more) not available for F7?
by Mark
Hey,
I mainly use Fedora 7 for web server purposes but i'm currently
missing the updates for both php and mysql.
The last php package for F7 : php-5.2.2-3.i386.rpm
The latest MySQL package for F7 : mysql-5.0.37-2.fc7.i386.rpm
And i would like to have them both updated to: php 5.2.3 and MySQL
5.0.41.. i always thought that Fedora would update packages as long as
it where no major releases.. but it seems like even some security
updates (php 5.2.3 is mostly a security update release) fail to make
it in the updates.
And the php package (updated) is available for F8 (rawhide):
php-5.2.3-3.i386.rpm
And if i'm looking to another package (Pidgin in this case) than i see
that it is fully updated with the latest release on
F7..(pidgin-2.0.2-3.fc7.i386.rpm)..
So.. how does this work now? are minor version changes still updated
on F7? and are security releases still updated on F7? because i'm
kinda confused about the updating progress.
Thanx,
Mark.

Windows shares on F7
by Weiner, Michael
Fellow list readers -
I am running F7 on an x86_64 box, and have an application (Pro/E) that i
am using for some design work. My work group has a windows share that i
need to save my work to, and was wondering what the easiest method is to
make a samba share show up in the linux filesystem so that it will show
up in the application?
Any ideas would be appreciated
Michael

How to generate č (c-hachek) in KDE
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Is there a combination of keys (CTRL/ALT/C or whatever) that will
generate a č (c-hachek) in a system running KDE under FC-7? I know I
can get such characters out of KChar Select, but I am tired of doing
this repeatedly in editing comments into pictures of a recent trip to
Dalmatia. I could, of course, change to the Croatian keyboard layout,
but this seems too much for an occasional non ASCII character.
My apologies if the mail system garbles this message.
Thanks - jon

Wow! I looked at the web pages and those are all Red Hat maintained
and show a lot of work on the kernel's modules. Looks real busy. As for
making my own that will not happen again soon. The only thing I might
want to do is add a module that is the basis for a system that uses the
WiFi transceiver in my lap-top. It appears that Intel has done a lot of
good work here.
Thanks
Karl
----- End of Original Message ----
Karl,
If you are going to make a kernel module you just need kernel-devel package. Some packages for intel modules are already on Fedora kernels, and others that are not intel based can be found on Atrpms, freshrpms, livna, etc.
# yum install kernel-devel
and compile what you need.
Regards,
Antonio

FC6 ipw3945 on Dell D820 not working. What's the best way?
by David Kramer
SO I bought this brand new Dell Latitude D820. I've been trying to get
a fully working Linux install on it for weeks. I tried F7, but the new
suspend mechanism doesn't work on this laptop, and there's no way around
it, so I installed FC6. But with FC6, I can't get the ipw3945 wireless
working. I can't catch a break!
There seems to be several ways: the iwl* packages, the ipw* packages,
with or without Network Manager...
So scanning the internets and this list, this is what I have now:
[root@lexa ~]# uname -a
Linux lexa.thekramers.net 2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 #1 SMP
Tue Jun 19 19:27:14 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@lexa ~]# rpm -qa | egrep '(3945|ieee)'

ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2-4.at
ieee80211-kmdl-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6-1.2.16-18.fc6
ieee80211-1.2.16-18.fc6
libieee1284-0.2.9-3.2.2
[root@lexa ~]# lsmod | egrep '(3945|ieee)'
ipw3945 180000 1

ieee80211_crypt 9216 1 ieee80211

[root@lexa ~]# ps -e | egrep '(3945|ieee)'

3676 ? 00:00:00 ipw3945/1
3685 pts/2 00:00:00 ipw3945d
[root@lexa ~]# egrep '(3945|ieee)' /etc/modprobe.conf
alias eth1 ipw3945
install ipw3945 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ipw3945 ;
sleep 0.5 ; /sbin/ipw3945d --timeout=2
remove ipw3945 /sbin/ipw3945d --kill ;
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove ipw3945
[root@lexa ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt
# for the documentation of these parameters.
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=eth1
HWADDR=00:1b:77:2c:64:c4
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=
DHCP_HOSTNAME=lexa.thekramers.net
IPADDR=
DOMAIN=
ONBOOT=no
USERCTL=yes
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
ESSID=DONTPANIC
MODE=Managed
RATE='36 Mb/s'
CHANNEL=1
"iwconfig eth1" and "iwlist eth1 scanning" both produce good-looking
results, but the WiFi light is flashing very quickly, and "ifconfig eth1
up" doesn't get an IP address, nor does "dhclient eth1", which just
keeps trying.
So what am I doing wrong?
What does the fast blinking WiFi lite mean?
What's the difference between the iwp* packages and the iwl* packages?
Thanks. I hope I included enough information. I'm pretty desperate at
this point. This is an expensive laptop!

DVD Burner under kvm?
by John Pierce
Hello!
First I would like to say that kvm under fedora 7 is outstanding, I
installed windows xp and gave it an ip address during the installation
and it just worked including samba shares.
Now, is it possible to get the vm to see my dvd burner like vmware
does. Can I specify cdrom /dev/scd0?
I would like to make backups of my windows programs data, and would
like to do it to a dvd.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Shutdown stalled on stopping eth0 when no network cable present.
by Sultan Saini
I'm having a strange problem for which I havent found any help. When I
shutdown FC6 and there's no ethernet cable, shutdown stalls when it
tries to stop eth0. I have to manually power down. This happens at
home only where I have a wireless network.
Any clues as to whats happening? I'm not even sure what info to
include with this message...

F7: Howto monitoring a Hardware sata raid controller
by Dario Lesca
Hi, I have a Server HP with this controller RAID:
00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801GR/GH (ICH7 Family)
SATA RAID Controller (rev 01)
I have configure the 2 disk in hardware RAID-1 mode (F7 can manage this
controller raid).
Fedora use this modules:
# cat /etc/modprobe.conf
alias eth0 tg3
alias eth1 tg3
alias scsi_hostadapter ahci
alias scsi_hostadapter1 ata_piix
All work great, but the disk (and controller) do not warn if a disk is
break (or hot-remove), until I reboot the server.
It's possible to monitoring the state of RAID controller via software?
Someone can point me on right way?
Many thanks...

DHCP and DNS
by Michael Semcheski
Hello,
I've got a laptop with wireless and wired networking. I'm using
NetworkManager. Couldn't be happier with it, except for one thing.
When I right click on the NetworkManager icon, and select "Connection
Information", everything seems OK. Correct IP and DNS information.
However, the only way I can get DNS to work is to go into
system-config-network, and set the primary DNS there.
I want the computer to use the DNS server that the DHCP server tells
it, rather than enter it myself. Any thoughts?
