UDEV
by Karl Larsen
I read but did not understand any details of udev but I am certain it
is why my old application called gmfsk finds that /dev/dsp is busy. It
is not busy but the current setup of udev makes it appear busy. Also it
is certain that udev can have upset with the new kernels and be causing
the problems some or most of us are having.
Udev is not simple.

F7 crash investigation
by korgull
Hi,
I installed yet another box with F7 but this new box has got a major issue, F7
keeps crashing on it while windows works well on it.
Crashes occur about every 10-20 minutes and need a hard reset. They seem to
occur at random, sometimes while booting sometimes just by looking at the
screen...
I have slowed down memory and cpu freqs (was not overclocked) to see if that
changes things, but it didn't.
Where do I start investigating this issue ?

Marcel

How to prune out old rpm files from fedora repository?
by Paul Johnson
I run a server that has updates of RPMs I build for our lab. The
packages directory is getting too big and fat with 10 or 15 versions
of some RPMS. I wonder if somebody has a script that can clean out
the older versions? Something that cooperates with the createRepo
script?

freenx and desktop effects
by Dr. Michael J. Chudobiak
Hi all,
When I try to log into an account using freenx, and that account
normally has "desktop effects" (compiz) enabled, application windows
have no border displayed. No minimize/maximize buttons appears.
Everything works if I disable desktop effects (from the physical
machine; I can't disable them from an nx session).
Can I make freenx and compiz co-exist happily? (I don't need to see
wobbly windows in the freenx session, but I do need the window borders...)

Strange grub behavior w/new 2.6.22.1-41 kernel
by Casey Stamper
I got home today and updated my laptop w/the latest kernel and other
updates. When I rebooted, grub automtically went back to the previous
kernel. I had to manually choose the new one. It's easy enough to fix in
menu.lst but I thought the default behaviour was to make the latest kernel
the default.

Unionfs/aufs instead of LVM?
by Omri Schwarz
I thought I'd ask if
anyone else is thinking of this: merging disks and partitions at the
filesystem level rather than the block device level.
The advantages that come to mind:
- If a disk is lost, only the files belonging to it are lost,
instead of the whole logical volume.
- Copying a component volume to another one is easier, and can
be done without any outage to the filesystem at large.
- Portions of the filesystem can be backed up instantly by
mandating for example that /home belong to two component
filesystems that are simple copies of each other.
- Facile interface for snapshots.
- Component filesystems that can be set read-only.
Disadvantages:
Getting unionfs/aufs to DTRT in this context.

why is my wireless totally borked in f7?
by Robert P. J. Day
the short question: what is it about upgrading from fc6 to f7 that
completely destroyed my wireless?
the long form: ever since upgrading to f7 (actually, a fresh
install), i've been unable to get wireless access, which i've had
without problems for at least the last couple releases. i've asked
about this before and i've been fighting with this on and off lately,
and i plan on spending time this weekend going at this again. but,
really, has anyone else gone through this and can explain what it is
about f7 that just sucks WRT wireless?
my main system is a dell inspiron 9200 in which i use a linksys
pcmcia card (WPC11-V31) which worked flawlessly with my linksys WAP
until f7. i also have a gateway MX7120 with onboard wireless running
f7 which also utterly fails to connect.
wireless used to be an absolute no-brainer until f7 -- the total
failure. is there something simple i'm overlooking? i can't be more
detailed until i go at this over the weekend but if there's something
stupidly trivial i might have overlooked WRT f7, by all means, make a
suggestion. thanks.

NM use for the advanced user.
by Aaron Konstam
Let me share something that most people miss. If you are using NM just
left click on the nm-applet and choose an option :
Connect to Other Wireless Network
You will be given a GUI window which allow you to choose a series of
Security methods that most people never see.

This has also happened to me at school, sometimes human error, like some persons have mentioned before forget about certain drivers and we get things like this happening. I have another machine at school, and it had a Sis based Ethernet, and when 2.6.21.1 was released, the unpatched one, the machine hung and gave a kernel panic. Then someone reported the issue and the patch was issued and things got fixed. On one of my machines, the DHCP never worked and it hung getting IP address from DHCP, I turned off the network on it (chkconfig network off) and manually added IP address, DNS and gateway and got connected. I asked for help on the list and serveral people were very nice and gave me advice. The problem as at school, the big computer that issues out IP's according to mac addresses had two machines with different Mac Addresses sharing the same IP. The other machine got the IP address and mine of course did not. The solution was to remove the
other computer and of course things started working out fine. I turned network on which chkconfig and removed the lines from /etc/rc.local that gave ip address manually.

You are absolutely correct. It does not seem to matter, because with both newer kernels, the martian_dev does not work, while another one does. When I use that machine I connect with the older kernels.

I suggest that there is nothing wrong with the kernels since the other winmodem works. Smartlink 56K PCI. Take a look here
