USB related development on Linux
by Fernando Cassia
Hi there,
I know this list is ´users´ oriented. So what mailing list can you
guys suggest for learning specifically about Linux USB programming, ie
´for newbies´? You know, where one can learn about the oddities of the
usb protocol by example without being lectured to RTFM?. ;)
Is there any such list?. or at least a good book recommendation?
TIA for any suggestions.

Android Kernel
by Fedora User
There is a great deal of conflicting information regarding (ARM) kernel
compilation over Fedora. Has anyone the 2.6 kernel data from froyo and
migrated that to a 3.0 Gingerbread kernel? Are you willing to share
your .config?

Revisor error at build
by Artifex Maximus
Hello!
I would like to build a customized installer image on my F17 i386.
I've found out that revisor is for that task. I had problems with
starting revisor and needed some work on my system (linking
/usr/libexec/anaconda folder to /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime).
Finally I create revisor.conf, configuration for yum and a kickstart
file. I'd started the build with the following:
revisor \
--config=revisor.conf \
--kickstart=ks.cfg \
--model='slc63-i386' \
--install-dvd \
--cli \
--yes \
--debug 9
The build process always finished with "No Package Matching
anaconda-runtime. This is a required package.". If I remove anaconda
from kickstart it says that anaconda is required package and then says
anaconda-runtime is not found. Any idea what is the problem?
As you might notice I am building an SLC spin but I think as long as
repositories are right that is possible.

Kernel 3.5 Issue with Secondary Disk
by Sawrub
Hello All,
On August 11 the latest Kernel 'kernel-3.5.0-2.fc17.x86_64' was updated
via YUM and on rebooting the machine, there was an error similar to
'Welcome to emergency mode. Use systemctl default or ^D to active
default mode' for a second drive on the machine other then the one with
the installation.
But when I tried booting the machine with the old kernel
'kernel-3.4.6-2.fc17.x86_64', the system came up fine. So to my surprise
the issue is there with the new kernel. Did anyone else saw/faced the issue.
For the time being i've removed the kernel 3.5 from my machine and its
working fine. Will be happy to help to resolve this problem.
Attached is the dmesg log for the kernel 3.5 boot-up.

Anonymous samba share
by Pasha R
I'm trying to create an anonymous samba share. I added line "map to
guest = Bad User" to smb.conf and got it to work. But there is still
minor annoyance: whenever someone accesses this share from windows, it
still asks for user and password. Only after entering any garbage in
user name, it allows access. Is there a method to share a dir without
requiring user to enter username/password at all?

Accessing NTFS on an IDE drive through a USB external caddy
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks.
've got a WinXP system that's got stuffed by a virus. I've put a new HDD in
and started a clean install and now I'm trying to use my (F17) Linux laptop
to copy the files off the old HDD and scan them. However, when I connect the
external USB caddy Linux fails to read the driver, as per the log entries
below.
Can anyone suggest how I can get access to the drive please. There is nothing
physically wrong with the drive and Windows did boot fine when it was in the
PC.

Best variant of Fedora for a Virtual Machine...?
by And Kemp
Hi,
I'm currently trying to study for the LPIC-1 Linux certification exam
and part of it is to familiarize oneself with the different software
management utilities. To this end I've tried to download and install
64-bit Fedora versions on a virtual machine. The version for Gnome just
will not install, so moving down the list of options, I stumble upon the
KDE version, download and install. So far, so good...
To practice prior to my exam I would like to be able to enter commands
at the command line: obtaining (separate) terminal windows using KDE
comes across as clunky (I usually use Ubuntu - sorry!). Whilst
<CNTRL><ALT><F2> to enter a full terminal screen is straightforward,
it's not helpful (to me at least) in terms of being able to switch
between panes (I generally like a lot of them for things like man pages,
different directories, etc.). Konqueror, Konsole and all other thinks,
"K" start off as being chipper but after a day, not so much... Access
via the main menu is now becoming more than tiresome.
I've trawled through the documentation as best I can (all I want is a
couple of meaningful shortcut icons on a desktop - hardly a mammoth
operation to my mind) in terms of, "getting started" but creating icons
comes across as an insurmountable problem (That whole, "create shortcut
on desktop" option just doesn't work on my installation . The shortcut
appears: does it run when clicked? Does it cuckoo...). Simple things
like mounting the CD drive from a command line can be summarized,
according to my impression of Google forum replies, as, "RTFM!
RTFM!... It's automatic (the only thing missing here is, 'You
idiot')!". [Note: It's *NOT* automatic; nor is in any manual I could
locate: one has to create a device folder (at least, that's how I fixed
the problem in the end, having tried (and failed) to adopt the "Fedora
way", assuming there is such a thing!)] Part of this familiarization
process is the reason I downloaded Fedora in the first place, but as a
general-purpose (Ubuntu) Linux user, don't really expect to have to read
through the entire manual to be unable to accomplish the simplest tasks
for a variant of an OS I'm relatively comfortable with.
In terms of rpm / yum, it's mainly plain sailing, but I'm having an
issue which don't appear to be addressed effectively from google
searches: I try and query packages (using -qv) to be informed that the
package is not installed. I try and install it to be informed it's
already installed! Any advise you can offer in this regard would be
gratefully received.
Equally, I (over?)looked the FAQs for this mailing list, so my pitiful
cry for advise in terms of a palatable variant of Fedora may well be a
case of, "RTFM, ..."
Finally(!) a question: At the risk of opening a kettle of worms [can of
worms / kettle of fish] I believe I'm having a poor Fedora experience
because of my being unable to adopt a KDE mindset (correctly?). I
believe I've missed something really 'obvious' with regards to the UI.
Is it possible to eliminate KDE or should I attempt a different
download? Which would you recommend? Am I creating problems for myself
by selecting a 64-bit installation or should I go with 32-bit?
Hope you can help.
Thanks for reading,
Best wishes,
And Kemp.

Fedora 17 Crashes on fresh install
by Mickey
F17 / KDE
It will crash when trying install.
It will crash when your trying do yum update.
There is no pattern as to when it will crash.
When the crash happens it takes you back to a black screen with a lot of
white print.
Below is the last three lines of crash when I was trying to do a yum update
889.604907 [drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Setting dpms mode3 on vga

OT: problem with linking programs using lesstif
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
I have a problem with a program using lesstif: compiling OK, but
problems with linking (x86_64 platform):
gcc -o xmdemo xmdemo.o \
-lXm -lXt -lXpm -lXext -lX11
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXpm
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
gmake: *** [xmdemo] Error 1
On my box:
ls -l /usr/lib64/libXpm*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 16 Mar 16 08:11 /usr/lib64/libXpm.so.4 ->
libXpm.so.4.11.0
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 75392 Mar 8 16:14 /usr/lib64/libXpm.so.4.11.0
That means: libXpm-3.5.10-1.fc17.x86_64 is installed!
All comments are welcome
Kind regards
