can't get grub to use /etc/default/grub
by sean darcy
I'm trying to disable the spectre mitigations. I've set up
/etc/default/grub:
cat grub
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="$(sed 's, release .*$,,g' /etc/system-release)"
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=true
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="console"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=UUID=d695f875-5220-49ab-8b0d-4f58649cd8ad
nomodeset rhgb quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=UUID=d695f875-5220-49ab-8b0d-4f58649cd8ad
nomodeset pti=off spectre_v2=off l1tf=off nospec_store_bypass_disable
no_stf_barrier"
GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"
but the command line is not used when I update the kernel. I tried again
with dnf reinstall kernel*.

df -H shows irritating values
by Frank Elsner
Hello,
I have a 64GB USB-Stick inserted to my Fritz!Box which is available as a
SMB mount point.
When I mount it "df -H" shows
Filesystem Size Used Avail . Mounted on
..
//fritz.box/nil 123G 38G 86G 31% /nas
All values are doubled (except the Use% of course).
What's going on there?
Kind regards, Frank

where is /sys/class/drm/* ?
by jim.cromie@gmail.com
so I just upgraded an old Dell Optiplex 760 - Core 2 Duo - 686 class box
Fedora 28 -> 29
and all manner of things went wrong.
I had to fall back to runlevel 2 boot, and fiddled.
switching display manager to lightdm helped,
allowing a graphical boot again.
Resolution is very low, mouse arrow is huge.
it turns out that /sys/class/drm doesnt exist.
dmesg | grep drm is empty.
ISTM this is the problem - if the kernel doesnt know about the monitor
then resolution is not available to display manager either.
I was able to figure a horrid workaround,
by plugging in a better monitor and cold-booting
afterwards, I swapped vga connector back to original monitor,
it kept the same better resolution
I have built my own kernel, v4.20-rc3+
which works properly, and has /sys/class/drm/* as expected
I built it like
1- cp /boot/config-f29-mumble .config;
2- make localmodconfig
3- make xconfig - flip 64bit build off on this 32bit box
4- make; make install
Aside: I think step 3 should be unnecessary - build box == install box
which should correct/override any defaults taken from 1,
or by other operations of 2
I have since dnf updated, rebooted to 19.2, it exhibits same problem
and rebooting to rc3+ fixes resolution problem wo doing the nasty monitor swap
does anyone else seeing anything odd
(I presume) related to old 32bit hardware and video card ?

off topic: sort problem
by Amadeus WM
I've been using sort for years and I just ran into something I've never
seen and I can't explain.
cat spam
AA|3334
A|3826
cat spam | sort -k1 -t"|" # this works!
A|3826
AA|3334
Now
cat junk
AA|def
A|xyz
cat junk | sort -k1 -t"|" # this doesn't
AA|def
A|xyz
The two files spam and junk have the exact same first column, but one
gets sorted, the other doesn't. What am I missing?
Thanks!

Interesting bug installing from 64 bit f29 live image
by Tom Horsley
Here's an interesting bug to watch out for:
I spent a while today trying to install a fedora 29 x86_64
workstation in a virtual machine using the live image and
install to disk:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1652092
I reported that as a virt-manager bug, but I'm thinking it
is really an anaconda bug. The custom partitions I tried
to create always hung during the installer disk formatting
phase.
I worked around it by using the "advanced" custom partitioning
tool instead of mere "custom", and with the exact same partitions,
it zipped right through formatting and did the install.
