Actually, there is a 2.6.9 kernel in the development tree which I think
is supposed to address the problem:

The nVidia installer installs the necessary files directly into your
system's directories (though it might help to know *which* files need to
be moved). All you should have to do is copy them from machine to
machine. Failing that, why not just copy the
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run package to the new machine and
extract/build/install the modules/libraries there....
It is a minor point but the current NVIDIA driver script is:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run
