The first use of acronym IMP in computer communications was the
Interface Message Processor, the packet switch for early
Arpanet:

First IMPs went on-line late 1969, 4 years before the first
version of CP/M booted.
Irv Hoff deserves the credit for his communication program, but
not for the TLA he re-used as its name.
