Duplicate packages - what do I do?

On a new install of FC4 x86_64, I find that I'm getting duplicate packages. I've included the output of 'rpm -qa | sort' below to illustrate. This seems to be causing problems with 'yum upgrade'. If I try to delete a duplicate, I get an error message: [root@muses ~]# rpm -e alchemist-1.0.36-1 error: "alchemist-1.0.36-1" specifies multiple packages I've tried rebuilding the rpm database and I've tried re-installing the OS. Same duplicates. This cannot be a good thing. Any idea how I can fix or prevent this? Hi, I'm playing with FC4 toy now and have a stupid question: normally any two different packages can not share a regular file otherwise there will be a confliction, but why these two packages xorg-x11-libs.x86_64 and xorg-x11-libs.i386 can have same files? Hello, I am looking for one synthetic summary of all the main new features and improvements which found their way in the 2.6xx (and maybe 2.4.xx too) kernels since the beginning of 2005. Does something like this exist? I know the detailed changelogs are online, but I don't need *all* those details. If a summary doesn't exist: what would *you* list as main feature/ improvement? Just the feature name is OK, I can find and study it myself afterwards. Syslog configuration help

Hi I'm trying to get all my cisco equipment to log to my server. I've managed to get it logging, but I'm getting duplicate logging. The logs are going into the correct cisco log files, but they are also going into /var/log/messages. my question is is there a "none" statement to place in the messages log line, or something else to fix this? Combat MUD Server for FC4

Quick rsync question

I just finished rsyncing a bunch of data to another drive. I'm doing this for backup purposes so I'll run it every night. After it finished I realized it went one directory level too deep. So I moved the data to the correct level and adjusted the rsync command. But now it want to recopy everything. Here's the rsync command I used: rsync -turv0 --progress --delete /media/160GBUSBDSK/data /mnt/USBbkup- storage What option should I use to get rsync to get it to update without wanting to re-copy everything? I'm looking at rsync --help, but not sure what options I should use. Thanks, James

hi i recently installed Linux for the first time. i'm running FC3 and GNOME. after getting all of my hardware/networking stuff running and tested, then i ran the "red hat network alert notification tool", cause it said that there were several updates for me. one of the updates was from kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.667 to kernel-smp-2.6.12-1.1381_FC3. after that update, i have 3 GRUB options: FEDORA CORE (2.6.12-1.1381_FC3smp) FEDORA CORE (2.6.9-1.667smp) WinXP when i try to boot the new 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3smp kernel, i get this message: ... Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. ide0: I/O resource 0x1F0-0x1F7 not free. ide0: ports already in use, skipping probe Red Hat nash version 4.1.18.1 starting Reading all physical volumes. may take a while... No volume groups found No volume groups found No volume groups found mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! then the machine hangs, and i have to push the power button. kernel-smp-2.6.9-1.667 still works, and so does winXP. my searching on the web leads me to think that i need a new initrd. will a new initrd fix this? how do i make a new initrd. can this be done in a terminal while running the old kernel, or must i work from the command line before booting (where i've no experience) will i be able to have both kernels, along with winXP as boot options? any tips/suggestions/explanations will be appreciated. thanks roger __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
