How do I switch LVM disks?

I got a new disk, and created LVMs on it. I copied the filesystems OK. But, how do I get the new disk mounted as /? For that matter, what determines what LVM gets mounted where? I'm guessing it's part of the LVM information. I noticed that system-config-lvm has options to select where logical partitions get mounted. I hope I don't need to switch it by editing with system-config-lvm - because if I mess that up, I'm basically screwed. I tried editing grub.conf: title Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.1948_FC5) root (hd0,2) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.1948_FC5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.15-1.1948_FC5.img title Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.1948_FC5)#2 root (hd0,2) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.1948_FC5 ro root=/dev/7200rpm/LogVol02 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.15-1.1948_FC5.img But if I select #2 it panics saying it can't find /dev/root, (or something like that). 64 bit compile of tcltls for amsn

amsn uses ssl and at first startup of the app it goes and downloads a package for ssl called tcltls. This is required so that clear text passwords are not passed accross networks. There is no precompliled version of tls1.5 for 64 bit. In FC4 64 bit this is what I get when compiling tls1.5.0-src.tar.gz: ./configure loading cache ./config.cache configure: error: bad ssl-dir: cannot find openssl/opensslv.h under /usr/local/ssl/include There is no /usr/local/ssl directory in FC4 so the makfile or config file must need adjusting... Is there anyone who is using amsn on a 64 bit system? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks, Jim

Ok. I'm so close to what I want I can almost taste it. I'm on a cablemodem via RCN. They write my resolv.conf file with search cable.rcn.com because of dhcp/dhclient. I want to change something so that when the resolv.conf file is written by RCN, I end up with search syslang.net instead. Anyone know how to do this? TIA -- Time flies like the wind. Problems configuring Apache

I have configured Apache the way I want but am having problems letting it recognize URL's of the form http://myserver/~user I have copied the configuration I have on another box (a Dec Alpha) and also compared it to my configuration on a SUN and cannot figure out what is wrong. I have <IfModule mod_userdir.c> # # To enable requests to /~user/ to serve the user's public_html # directory, remove the "UserDir disable" line above, and uncomment # the following line instead: # UserDir public_html </IfModule> in my httpd.conf file but when I try to access a users public_html directory I get a 403 error with You don't have permission to access /~user on this server Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request I have tried setting the permissions to 777 on directories and 666 on files but that does not solve the problem. Any help in tracking down what is wrong in my configuration is greatly appreciated. -- Wojciech Komornicki

OT? Installing foreign package as rpm

This particular situation is one which is not exactly quite on topic, as I am using FC2 and want to install HPLIP. There already is an RPM for FC4. But the same situation probably arises with other packages which are available as source. So, my question is... How do I create an RPM for HPLIP for use with FC2? I think this is a better way than just # ./configure # make # make install I've used this for a few packages, but I'd prefer to use RPMs where possible. Anyone care to elaborate? Also, in this particular case, the FC4 RPM might just work, anyway. But I think the information on how to install as RPMs is applicable to most foreign packages and most/all versions of FC. Corrupt Superblock on /home

Hi, I still haven't been able to boot up my FC4 box, beyond repair mode without a live distro CD. The attempt gave me errors on /home with something along the lines of (from my notes): Buffer I/O error on device hdb1 /dev/hdb1 reaad failed after 0 of 2048 at 0 No Volume group found Using the live distro, I was able to determine that all of hdba will mount (except hdba3 which is swap space) along with hdb2, my /data directory. All mounted and I could see the files on /dev/hda1 (/boot), /dev/hda2 (/1), /dev/hda4 (/data1), /dev/sda1 (usb drive) and /dev/hdb2 (/data). The plan was to have OS files on hda and most/all data on hdb so that if the OS disk got hosed data wouldn't be lost. I tried "mount /dev/hdb1 -vt ext3 /mnt/hdb1" and got mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb1, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so root@2[root]# dmesg | tail Buffer I/O error on device hdb1, logical block 7 hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=63, high=0, low=63, sector=63 ide: failed opcode was: unknown end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 63 FAT: unable to read boot sector hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=65, high=0, low=65, sector=65 ide: failed opcode was: unknown end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 65 EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock I can't remember the command I used next, but I wound up getting the result of a "bad magic number in superblock" When I went back to repair mode, the file system start up gives clean report on /1, /boot, /data and /data1. I tried e3fsck, e2fsck with both the -cc and -t options followed by similar commands with plain fsck. This last try at fsck -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 gave me "Attempt to read block from file system resulting in short read while trying to open /dev/hdb1. Could this be a zero-length partition? I've even tried these commands on /dev/hdb and all I got was a little longer wait time before the bad news. I'm getting to the end of everything I can think of to do. My next bright idea is to try to change the partition names from /data1 to /home and making hdb1 /<something else> to verify that the OS is still working and perhaps get me back and running (although at a diminished capacity) while I learn and research. I've even toyed with the idea of installing windoze on the /data1 drive to see if I could get some sort of windoze disk data rescue software to retreive what I could of hdb1. Unless there has been some magic discovery of a software retrival package for linux since the last time it was discussed on this list. Mine works like this: " #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.1831_FC4) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.15-1.1831_FC4.img title Win 98SE rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title Ubuntu @ hda2 root (hd0,1) chainloader +1 " I began with Win 98SE, so it is the first thing on the original drive (hda) making it partition hda1 in Linux, but hd0,0 in GRUB speak. I then added a new drive (hdc) and installed FC4 on it, which put a GRUB on the original drive's MBR, and set up the chainloader to start 98SE. GRUB sees the new drive as the second drive, and it looks for FC4 directly on hd1,0. I then re-partitioned my original drive to allow experimental installs, shrank 98SE, and put Ubuntu on the second partition, telling the Ubuntu installer to put it on the same partition as Ubuntu. I then edited my FC4 GRUB to add a chainloader entry pointing to the Ubuntu GRUB in hd0,1, i.e the second partition on the first drive. Note that numbering from 0 instead of 1 is, or used to be, quite common in the computer world. GRUB starts at 0, Linux at 1. For a really good explanation of GRUB and booting, go to http://www.justlinux.com and do an advanced search for threads started by user Saikee in the "How I Did It!" forum. This guy is brilliant, everything the GRUB manual makes obscure he clarifies. There is an advantage to doing things this way that I have not seen mentioned, and have not actually tested yet. When I update my Ubuntu with a new kernel, it should know where its GRUB is, and will therefore update the GRUB menu.lst on hda2. Not successive in mirroring updates in this site

Do I have to erase the original /mnt/ms/fc4updates(some update rpm packages already existing) and create a new empty foleder for update rpms synchronization? what other preparation do I have to do, I just want do synchronize the fc4 i386 rpm packages and no the others like \ppc,\SRPMS,\x86_64 Thanks again
