How to disable gnome automount feature
by Nataraj
I have several USB drives that are getting automounted by gnome. I have
tried:
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_media false
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_drives false
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/volume_manager
shows that these are disabled. I even rebooted the machine, yet the
drives continue to be automounted. As far as I know all other automount
services are disabled:

How can I stop the automount of these disks?
Thanks,

clearing -nolisten option under kdm
by Rich Mahn
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to disable the '-nolisten tcp' option to
the X server under kvm. I know that for gdm, you can add this line
DisallowTCP=false
to the security area of the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. What is the
equivalent for kdm?

That's still not very useful. Do you want to keep yourself from accidentally
visiting facebook? Are you worried they might have images (say ads) on other
web pages. Are you trying to keep other users on your machine from going to
that site, but allowing them to visit other sites? The kind of solution you
might want to use depends on what you are really trying to do. For some
plausible goals and security models, iptables isn't going to be (at least in
itself) a workable solution.
If you want appropriate help you need to explain what you are really trying
to do, not ask for help about the details of implementing a particular
solution that may or may not be effective.

Security Cameras
by Gregory P. Ennis
Dear List,
This may be a little off topic so please forgive me.
I purchased a Security Camera in order to do some experiments. I have a
WCS-2060 IP CamSecure made by www.level1.com. I am suspicious that os
of the camera is linux based, but there software is primarily made to
communicate with MS Windows machines.
Are any of you using any linux based opensource software to monitor
security cameras and their output. What kind of linux options do we
have?

Graphics card recommendation?
by Timothy Murphy
I'm looking for a graphics card satisfying the following criteria:
1. Cheap
2. T&L capability
3. Works under Fedora-10, if possible as is.
[This is for a desktop with an Asus K8V-MX motherboard.
I need the T&L feature for my grand-daughter to play Sims-2
under Windows XP.]
Any and all suggestions gratefully received.

fc11 and sshd problem
by Gregory P. Ennis
Dear List,
I did a net install of Fc11 on an old e-machine over the weekend. This
was my first FC11 install. Everything went fine and must say I was
very impressed. Everything is working as expected except I have not
been able to get sshd to authenticate either rsa or dsa public keys.
When using ssh to log in to this new machine from either an FC9 or FC10
machine I am presented password authentication.
I have /root/.ssh/authorized_keys containing the *.pub keys of the
remote unites, but fc11 is not using this to authenticate.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Encrypted Root with F11
by Brian Mearns
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I apologize if this has been asked before, I checked the most recent
archives and didn't find anything.
I've successfully set up two separate LUKS encrypted logical-volumes,
one for home and one for root. Everything appeared to be working
fine, until I tried to delete my old root logical-volume and found
out it was still in use: the kernel was using it as the root,
even though mount had then replaced it at / with the encrypted
one. So I tried simply changing the root parameter to the kernel
(from grub.conf) so it points to the encrypted one, but when I
boot, the startup routine stops after a little while and just
hangs there until I ctrl-alt-del, and then it restarts. I don't
think it's reaching init, because I haven't seen any of the usual
"Starting some server... [OK]" messages. I guess that makes sense
if it's failing to load the root device, it wouldn't get to init.
So can anyone help me get this set up properly? I have a basic
understanding of the boot process and I guess that something needs
to be changed in initrd to tell it to unlock the encrypted root
disk before mounting it. But I have no idea how to do that.
On a related note, can anyone explain what's actually required
of the root FS loaded by the kernel? I tried setting up just a
1GB empty ext3 filesystem to use as the root, and then let mount
replace it with the encrypted one once init starts, but this also
caused the startup process to hang: apparently having a filesystem
alone is insufficient, there actually needs to be some stuff on it?
I'm using Fedora 11 on a Compaq Presario laptop (x86).
Many thanks for any help,
- -Brian

Switch-User fails for kde
by Rich Mahn
Problem:
Switch-User doesn't seem to work for KDE.
Details:
I login with kde as my desktop. Then I select switch-user from the
application menu. A popup pops up warning me that this will start a
new desktop. I select the button to go ahead. The screen goes blank
for a few seconds. Then the lockscreen prompt asks me for the password.
I enter it and am back where I was before.
If I login with gnome as the desktop, the switch-user works as expected.
However, at least once, I did the following:
1. login with gnome as desktop.
2. switch-user and login with kde as desktop.
3. attempt switch-user from second desktop. The result was that
the first desktop crashed and I couldn't access any of the
virtual terminals with alt-ctl-F#. Typing alt-ctl-F3, for example
gave me a botched screen (as did most other atl-ctl-F#). With the
botched screen, I could still return to my kde desktop with atl-ctl-F8.
Configuration:
I'm using a fresh install of F11 for X86_64. This has occurred on
two different systems (the only ones I've tried). On one I'm using
the radeon driver, on the other a nouveau, so it isn't that likely to
be a video driver problem.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks

F11: ATI Graphics Drivers and 3D
by Terry Barnaby
Fedora 11 seems to have major problems with ATI graphics cards and 3D.
I have two systems with ATI graphics. One is a RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
and one is and ATI Mobility Radeon X300.
I am trying to run Blender and Paraview.
Both of these are subject to major 3D display errors (missing popup windows
etc) and X-Server hangs (sometimes X Server in 100% loop and kill -9 has no effect).
These worked on Fedora 8 Ok although I did need to use the ATI driver
for the Radeon X300 to get decent performance.
I have tried "nomodeset" on the kernel command line to no avail. Is there
any recommendations to getting later drivers and do people know
where most faults lie: kernel, DRM, X-Driver ?
Cheers

Skype is a CPU hog on Fedora 11
by Robert Wuest
Skype was working fine on Fedora 10, but on 11 it consumes 100% of a CPU
(running on a Q6600 system). On Fedora 10, it's CPU usage was in the
noise. After a while (a couple of minutes), the lag time increases to
where it is essentially unusable. I just did an strace of a call to the
skype testing service thing and I don't really see anything interesting
in there. Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong? Something wrong
with my audio maybe?
