Firefox 6 crashes with (most recent) Java
by Per Anton Rønning
The problem listed in the subject line seems to be widespread. Svereal
people report this problem on various discussion lists.
As soon as Firefox tries to start a plugin, it breaks down with a
message "this is embarrasing" etc. I have not yet found any fix that
seems to work. I tried to install Firefox 5 instead of 6 to see if the
problem is a ver. 6 problem, but now it does not pick up the Java plugin
(does not appear in the Tools/Add-ons list.) So it cannot be enabled.
I have created a symlink to
usr/java/jre1.6.0._27/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so,
both in /opt and (created by myself) /opt/plugins.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what will fix this problem?
Best regards

running programs as root in KDE
by Gerhard Magnus
As a longtime gnome user, I've been disappointed in finding my hardware
simply can't handle gnome3 of FC15 and have switched to KDE. I've
connected to the Internet and now want to enter the names of IP
addresses of my other boxes in /etc/hosts. Something that used to be
simple -- i.e. open Konsole, then as superuser, kwrite /etc/hosts & --
doesn't work and instead delivers error messages that make no sense to
me, let alone give me anything to work with.
Clearly there must be an easier way to do this but, so far at least,
Google has not been my friend. One "howto" suggested using the "Run
command..." from the K menu and then completing the "run as different
user" section of the "Options" menu, but the "Options" menu doesn't
exist in this version of KDE.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated so I can continue with this
upgrade. I don't mind using Linux being an ongoing adventure, but this
is a bit much.

script to create dvd sized folders for backup
by Antonio Olivares
Dear folks,
Is there a way via script to create backup folders for a certain directory. I have a home folder with Documents/, Downloads/, Pictures/, Videos/, etc as created by default on Fedora. I want to say go to Downloads/ and make several folders (dvd1, dvd2, dvd3, ..., ) as many as are needed to backup the whole directory into 4.3 GB dvd sized ones. If I can make iso images of these it would be an added plus. I want to backup some photos, Documents, and miscelaneous files that I have into DVDs. I had a hard drive to do this(backup) but it is giving read errors :( This way I can save many files and then remove everything to try and test out Fedora 16 (alpha/beta) or install from livecd.

Network printer not working, how to debug?
by Gordon Charrick
I just bought a Brother laser all-in-one (MFC-7860DW) after determining
that it should work fine with Linux. It does wired/wireless and I have
it connected to my network via wireless.
A mac and a windows machine on the network see the printer and it works
fine with them.
When I use system-config-printer to try to set up the printer in Fedora
15 the following happens:
I click the Network Printer dropdown under "Select Device" and the
printer shows up with the proper IP address. Under "Connection", "IPP
network printer via DNS-SD" is selected. I choose the driver and apply
the settings. It prompts to print a test page and I click to print it.
The job for the test page is submitted and a window with the settings
shows up and the Printer State shows as "Stopped - Destination printer
does not exist!". The Device URI is
"dnssd://Brother%20MFC-7860DW._ipp._tcp.local/".
Not really sure where to go from here.

f15 and gstreamer
by Gregory P. Ennis
List,
I have finally got F15 working fairly well and thought I would install
the gstreamer ugly etc to see if I can use some of the video software.
I am sure I have overlooked something easy to find, but I can not find a
way to get these RPM's with F15.
Can someone direct me to a link to get started on this.
Thanks,
Greg Ennis

running programs as root in KDE
by Robert McBroom
> As with most things, it's easy when you know the tricks. I hope these
>teething troubles don't discourage you.
Teething Troubles--It's like climbing up a sand dune. This protecting me from
myself is getting terribly frustrating. I want to do work not continually chase
the user interface. I was happy with fvwm but it has become moribund.
KDE3 worked fine but KDE4 is awful. I switched to GNOME now leaving for xfce4.
Along the way the administration of my systems is gone. A terminal session
switched to root with "su -" can't start a program needing the display reliably
no matter which desktop is used. Analogous to kdesu, single programs can be
started with sudo but an xterm started that way cannot start a next level gui
program. Sometimes the DISPLAY variable can be reset and get the "su -" root
session to inherit the display. A real hassle when trying to compile, install
and debug. Even CENTOS is following the pack.

Help Pl: Fedora 15 not detecting PCI Parallel Port
by Sanjay Arora
Hello
I have installed Fedora 15 on Intel DH67BL motherboard & Intel I7-2600
Processor. Since I need to print to a Dot Matrix printer on LPT: I added a
PCI Card providing a Parallel & a Serial Port. On the box it says Linux
supported, but does not provide any driver. Literature inside says use
Parport drivers.
BIOS shows the card installed, identifies it as 32 bit/33 MHz, and shows
Vendor/Device Id as <4348:5053>. But there are no options to enable/disable
or change any settings, so I think rest is all software driver related.
I need to initialize the parport driver automatically at boot time. Can
someone provide instructions or point to a resource. Net search on parport
is yielding low level programming links, but I just need to initialize the
parallel port to install a dot matrix printer.
Please help.
Sanjay.
