VMware Workstation 8.0 on F15
by Christopher A Williams
Just a confirmation in case anyone is asking...
I upgraded to VMware Workstation 8.0 this morning on my F15 x64 systems.
I haven't had the chance to test all of the features yet, but the base
functionality works out of the box. No muss, no fuss...
More to come, especially if I run into trouble.
Cheers,
Chris

System starts by itself
by john@mbstemps.com
I had posted a prblem with FC15 about an updated system that started by itself for no apparent reason.
The solution was, do a new install from scratch, NOT an update. That problem was solved but the system still had a number of small problems, my solution was to do a yum update , things have gotten much better at this point, I still have a problem Rhythembox recongnizing cd contents, when other apps do just fine and printing that crashes, but things are working out. Recommendation to anybody, # 1 don't do an upgrade, put your stuff in a configured /home directory and do a cold install, and do a yum update, immediately!
Now I just wish I could get the stupid looking bird in a tree screen gone from the startup user selection screen, does anyone know what procedure is called to start the system?
Thank you in advance and this group has generally very interesting comments, I use KDE for Fedora and our RHEL systems and really don't like KDE 4.x, but I am still looking into 'tunning KDE' does anyone know of using KDE 3.x instead. I wish they would have simply made KDE3.x faster, more reliable and possibly made the program functionallity a little better, rather than the big change that was made.

Suspend doesn't always resume
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fedora15 x86_64 install on an AMD Phenom system and doesn't
always resume from suspend. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this or
any idea why this would be happening. What can be done to fix this?
When pressing the power button to resume, the computer powers on but
is unresponsive. No display, USB mouse doesn't illuminate, can't
access it remotely. It's just lights on, no one home.
I've included a few details about my system below.
# /var/log/pm-suspend.log shows nothing particularly indicative of a problem

# lspci -v info showing motherboard info (Asus Crosshair IV Formula)

Is there something that specifically I should investigate with the

Is there a more specific forum that would be better suited for ideas here?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

DNS mystery: NetworkManager vs SELinux
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
My netbook has a rather vanilla installation of F15.
I tried a new desktop. Wireless didn't work (long story, not relevant) so
I manually ran network manager (didn't help). Then I rebooted back to
Gnome.
Wired networking seemed to no longer work. Actually, networking worked
but no domain names could be resolved.
After a lot of ineffective poking about (based on my deep understanding of
how things worked in the good old days before NM), I discovered (with
help) the problem.
NM creates a new /etc/resolv.conf.tmp whenever it learns (through DHCP or
whatever) what the name servers are. On my system, it could not manage to
replace /etc/resolv.conf. /var/log/messages showed:
<warn> could not commit DNS changes: (0) Could not replace /etc/resolv.conf: permission denied
"ls -l /etc/resolv.conf*" showed nothing scary. But "ls -lZ" did.
Something had labeled /etc/resolv.conf unconfined_u:object_r:etc_t:s0
instead of system_u:object_r:net_conf_t:s0
Fix: "restorecon /etc/resolv.conf"
How the heck is an ordinary user supposed to figure this out?

evolution hack?
by Randolph Jones
fc 14, evolution 2.32.0
my inbox has suddenly started showing the same piece of mail regardless
of which message I try to open.
the message line appears ok, but when i click to open it I get the same
piece of junk mail. this applies to all but the last message i received.
i recently rolled back fc15 to fc14 because I did not like the absence
of familiar tools. I had migrated evolution to fc15, and since I
reinstalled fc14 I have had very slow loading of evolution.
Any idea what is wrong?
TIA

In-Reply-To=%3C1316159218.4092.22.camel%40gibi.hackerstr.local%3E Hi, There is upstream availability of a new release version 1.4.6 of davfs2. I’ve filed a bug report already. Unfortunately, I can’t tell what concrete fixes are included. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=737300 Could you try to reproduce your problem with the new version? Regards, Raphael

Modern Firefox versions for F14?
by Chris Kloiber
After some quick Googling, it's apparent there are 3rd party repos
offering more modern Firefox versions for F14 and up. My question is why
these packages are not in Fedora proper. I could not find a statement as
to why this is the case. I'd have thought this would be a security issue
and get fixed. Thanks.

itunes-like applications
by Walter Cazzola
Dear Linux Experts,
I'm a linux user (Fedora 13 is on my machine) and recently I got an
ipad2. I'd like to transfer data among the linux box and the ipad2 as
itunes does on Mac/Windows is this possible? I don't need all the itunes
functionality just the possibility to send/receive files to/from the
ipad2 applications via the USB connection. Any tool to suggest?
Thanks a lot
Walter
PS. I don't want to jailbreak the ipad2
