Getting updates to Fedora 15
by Mickey
I have a live CD for Fedora 15, can I still get the updates for Fedora 15.
The Print drivers I have for My Samsung Color Laser CLX-3175FN just
won't work in Fedora 17 or 18 because of Glibc updated packages.
The printer worked great on Fedora 15.
The foo2qpdl driver will work for this printer but it doesn't print in
Color, Got to have Color.
Ghostscript won't even work with foo2qpdl anymore.

Xsane scans only 8.5 x 11 inches of 8.5 x 14 inch documents
by Jonathan Ryshpan
When an 8.5 x 14 in document is put into my scanner, xsane scans only
the top 8.4 x 14 in portion of it. How can I change this behavior?
(It's not easy.)
Simple scan scans the entire document, so the problem is not with the
scanner nor with the sane backend.
Scanner: FUJITSU ScanSnap S1300
Xsane version: 0.998
Sane version: 1.0.23
simple-scan version: 3.6.0
KDE: 4.10.1
Fedora-18 with all updates.
Thanks - jon

I want Fedora in my future, but is it possible?
by Peter G.
I have been looking at smartphones and tablets (I presently own
neither, due to outrageous monthly fees and lengthy contracts), as
I am starting to feel that I no longer want to do without mobility.
However, how does Fedora fit into this? Is there a way to put
Fedora onto a tablet or smartphone?
Ubuntu offers an intriguing compromise, for users of an Android
phone. Hook up a keyboard and monitor and run Ubuntu, so you don't
exactly have your full system in your hand, but you _do_ have it in
your pocket. Pretty cool, but it's not KDE-Fedora!
How do you go about it?

How do you get rshd to run? How are the .rhosts files created along the
way?

Upgrading Fedora 16 to 17 or 18 Problems.
by Michael D. Setzer II
I've got a lab of about 8 year old AMD FX-55 64 bit machines with
2G of Ram and Nvidia 5200 cards. I've had previous versions of
Fedora up to the current Fedora 16. The other day, was going to
do a test of upgrading machine and doing a clean install to see
the differences. Ran into some problems.
Tried preupgrade, and for some reason it would only offer the
upgrade to 17 and not 18? I then did the upgrade, and it went thru
the whold process, and finished with the message to reboot, but
the boot menu never had an option to do the upgrade. Just the
same old Fedora 16 kernels? The files were in the boot directory,
but nothing in the grub.cfg files?
I then burned a Fedora 18 DVD, and booted the machine, and
was expecting it to prompt for doing an upgrade or clean install.
Then all of the sudden it was doing a clean install, and had
repartitioned the disk with no prompting that it would wipe existing
file system.
Good news the system seems to work, but we have a number of
apps that we have always added to the desktop to run programs,
but doesn't seem to be a way to do that other than using
gnome-tweak-tool and setup options there, and I have copied the
shortcuts from other systems.

Re: Poor quality watching Quicktime movies on F18 [SOLVED]
by Andre Costa
Some follow up on this: found on this
thread<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1064095/commen...>that
setting
CLUTTER_VBLANK=none
makes it a *whole* lot better. In fact, AFAICS the problem is gone -- even
if NVidia driver is still set to sync to vblank. Other performance problems
which were also very noticeable on GNOME 3.6 (eg. moving windows around)
are also gone.
Not sure if this is a GNOME or a NVidia bug (or both), will dive deeper
into it later.

Andre

Badblocks Fedora 17
by Frank Murphy
I have a swap drive (/dev/sdf 20gb) that is giving some read errors
during boot-up. What would be most suitable options
badblocks -svwfBX -o /boot/badblocks/sdf.log
from the same pc with swap unmounted.

Fedora 18 security questions.
by William Mattison
I have a single desktop connected only to the internet. It's dual-boot: Fedora 18 and windows 7 home. In Fedora, it has more than one user id.
I skimmed/read through the Fedora 18 security guide, and much of the Fedora 18 installation guide and the Fedora 18 sys. admin. guide. As best as I can tell, the only thing that I need to do is make sure the default firewall is active as per this section of the security guide:
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/18/html/Security_Guide/sect-Se...
and make sure the system stays up-to-date ("yum" seems to be doing that). But my experience, understanding of computer security and sys. admin. are extremely poor and beginners level. I'm assuming that what these guides say about multi-computer systems, LANs, WANs, servers, etc. does not apply to my system. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Windows has security essentials and malwarebytes scanning browser traffic to detect and block malware, and scanning the hard drive to find and remove malware. What does Linux have corresponding to that? I'm just about certain that my old Linux system is infected with working spyware. I'd like to have something like security essentials, malwarebytes, etc. on my new Linux system.
Thank-you in advance for your help.
Bill.
