Fedora hangs driving me nuts, in Windows it works without problems!
by Valent Turkovic
My work Fedora 17 64bit box gangs without reason, and I can't track
down issue causing it! When I reboot into Windows 7 32bit it works for
days without any hangs.
This is a company PC so IT installed Windows 7, but I don't use it,
that is why I installed Fedora and use it as my primary desktop.
I'm not some guru sysadmin, but I'm not a newbie, as I have been using
Linux over 10 years as my primary desktop and have few private servers
that I maintain, I have troubleshooted and fixed numerous issues with
mine and friends machines.
My desktop works perfectly for hours, sometime for days, but after
some time (usually 1-2 days) it just freezes. It doesn't matter how
many free memory I have, which apps I'm runnig or which desktop I'm
using. I tried leaving just desktop running with no apps, still
freezes, changed desktops, kde - hangs, gnome 3 - hangs, mate - gangs,
tried leaving multiple apps doing something, still hangs. I ran memory
test utils, memory is working ok. These gangs are driving me nuts!
Is anybody having unexplained hangs with Fedora 16 and 17 64bit? Could
it be some 64bit issue because Windows is 32bit and it works?
How can I troubleshoot what is causing hangs of my machine?
Thanks.

Sound volume in f18 and xfce
by Joseph L. Casale
Each time I start my laptop, the sound is set to 153% or whatever max is. A tap of the
slider in the panel which is at 100% resets it to 100% (and not past that) and it sounds
fine.
Any idea how to stop this from resetting to max each startup?
Thanks!

hibernate with keystroke?
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have been trying to get to hibernate using a single keystroke. So,
here is what i tried:
put pm-hibernate in my sudo. Checked this by using:
sudo pm-hibernate
This works without a hitch.
Then I keyed in ctrl-f12 to be equivalent to sudo pm-hibernate.
(also tried sudo /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate).
Tried this, but this does not work. Pretty much nothing happens.
I am quite confident that there is nothing wrong with the syntax because
I replaced it with (say) slock and it locks the screen just fine.
What should I be doing here?
Alternatively, what is the command that is executed when I go through
gnome-logout and then press hibernate? I would just like to mimic that,
I guess.
Many thanks for any help/suggestions!
Best wishes,
Ranjan

Hello,
In average, once a day my gnome session freezes. Only one option,
open a text session and try to kill the gnome-session!
Any idea how to debug this?

F18: switching workspaces takes 10 seconds
by Patrick Lists
Hi,
Recently I installed F18 with GNOME on my laptop which has an ATI Radeon
X1300 GPU. Switching workspaces on F17 was pretty much instantaneous.
However with F18 when I switch from workspace 1 to 2 it takes about 10
seconds before workspace 2 appears. Is there something I can do to speed
up this process?
I use the Frippery Bottom Panel extensions so I just click on one of the
configured workspaces (6 total) in the bottom right corner.
Thanks,
Patrick

touchpad
by Peter G.
I just plugged in my brand new Logitech Wireless T650 touchpad.
The cursor moves, but I am unable to get any other response: no
tapping, etc.
I have the xorg synaptics driver and kcm_touchpad installed, but it
is greyed out and there is no way for me to activate it.
How do I do this?
