which init script takes care of loading the sound?
by Antonio Olivares
Which init script in /etc/rc.d/ or /etc/rc.d/init.d/ is the one responsible for loading of sound settings?
Is it /etc/rc.d/init.d/nasd
Network Audio System Daemon
if it is, then it should have
# Load mixer settings, where for the lack of a place in initscripts?
grep -q "\(alsa\)" /proc/devices
if [ $? = 0 -a -x /sbin/salsa ]; then
action $"Loading mixer settings" /sbin/salsa -l
fi
which complements the section in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt procedure/script
# Save mixer settings, here for lack of a better place.
grep -q "\(alsa\)" /proc/devices
if [ $? = 0 -a -x /sbin/salsa ]; then
action $"Saving mixer settings" /sbin/salsa -s
fi
Finding out, will fix the Bugzilla #247468.
Thanks,
Antonio

Gnome keyboard shortcuts in FC7
by Tim
Hi,
I've just tried to set up some keyboard shortcuts, using Gnome, and
found that some will not do anything, just like when I tried to do the
same back on FC4, and I'm darned if I can find anything helpful about
this.
Some of the functions available in the editor do nothing, yet the keys
assigned do work, e.g. The lock screen function doesn't work, no matter
what keys I use as the shortcut. Yet other functions do work, e.g. the
"Run a terminal" will open a terminal, even if I assign it a key without
a proper name, e.g. 0x7a showing in the configuration window.
Desktop
Launch help browser - does nothing
Log out - haven't tested
Sleep - haven't tested
Lock screen - does nothing
Home folder - does nothing
Search - does nothing
Email - does nothing
Launch web browser - does nothing
Show the panel run application dialog - works
Show the panel menu - works, but not always
Take a screenshot - works
Take a screenshot of a window - works
Run a terminal - works
Sound
Volume mute - does nothing
Volume down - does nothing
Volume up - does nothing
Play (or play/pause) does nothing
Pause - does nothing
Stop playback key - does nothing
Skip to previous track - does nothing
Skip to next track - does nothing
Eject - does nothing
I didn't bother going through all the rest. I'm mostly interested in
getting the volume, play, track skipping ones to work, and the screen
locking one would be handy. But how do you go about this?
In the past I have got XMMS to work with the audio buttons on an FC4
box, but I don't recall having to do anything more than see that keys
had certain X names applied (such as, out of the various play/pause
names that could be picked from, only specific ones worked).

How do I send smolt profile?
by Antonio Olivares
Dear all,
I have installed Fedora 7 on two of my machines. I did not enable smolt because it would not send anything due to no internet connection available( had to configure the winmodem ) after which there is a connection. I know that smolt is a service in /etc/rc.d/init.d/
In both compuers it is turned off
smolt 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
If I leave it off, how can I send in smolt profile for my two computers manually?
or
Do I have to turn service on and it will do its job on its own?
[olivares@localhost ~]$ smolt --help
bash: smolt: command not found
[olivares@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# smolt --help
-bash: smolt: command not found
[root@localhost ~]# man smolt
No manual entry for smolt
[root@localhost ~]#
Thanks,
Antonio

is there a way to get CD isos of Fedora 7?
by Darlene Wallach
I have a workaround to install Fedora 7 if I can get the
isos on CDs. I can only find DVD iso for Fedora 7.
I would think I'm not the only person who uses Fedora
who does not have a DVD reader/burner.
Is it now the policy of the Fedora Project to only
make DVD iso available for download?

Kernels and udev
by Karl Larsen
I am an expert at neither kernel or udev writing, but I do read the man
pages and I think some things need to be said.
First, udev is instructed by the kernel to write a thing in /dev/. If
this happens then the event can be completed. If the kernel words are
garbled or udev can't read it because it is too new, then udev does nothing.
I think the interface between udev and the old kernel is just fine and
this is why the USB ports work. I think the new kernel and the present
udev are not talking.
The fix to this problem is either a rewrite of udev or a rewrite of the
kernel. The fix also needs a person who has hands on experiance with
both the kernel and udev.
This sounds simple but it is not simple at all.

Qemu, Networking and F7
by Charles Curley
Has anyone got qemu working on F7 with networking? I've googled and
read the docs, but nothing I've tried produces a working network.
