Diversity team has purposed [1] for flock And
As our leader Maria Leandro [2] will not be available in-person in 
flock, we would like to discuss the agenda and ideas to make Diversity 
Panel successful.

Also, please note that We will have a set of panelist that will include 
people from different communities like Asperger, Autism, LGBT members, 
people from different languages and remote locations, and more. So, if 
you want to be part of the panel, you are most welcome, please let us 
know ASAP, so that we can co-ordinate better.

Hello all!!

One of the main things that I want to explore on this first panel will be
to identify those weakness points that our community has to include people
from minorities. Since we did a great job calling people to join this panel
and we have a fantastic diverse panel (YAY!) we should take advantage on
that and expand it.

In this first panel (I hope with years we can continue having this
activity) I would like to brainstorm with the attendees how we can adapt
our process to be more inclusive. Can we have an introduction video for
Fedora that includes a lot of people? should we work on a more explicit
draft for new contributors? Would be good to have a diversity welcoming
people in each team to make a more focused impact? etc etc.

This are some of my thoughts, however, I'm sure we will expand this ideas
within the next few days!

Hi everyone!

I know I've been absent from a lot of discussion lately, but have been
reading and keeping watch from afar on the mailing list.

The local chapter I lead as a part of the autistic self-advocacy network
(ASAN) has faced and is currently facing a lot of heavy issues,
specifically surrounding law enforcement, state/federal insurance coverage,
and a recently released anti-vaccination propaganda film called Vaxxed. So
while I haven't been able to contribute much, I still have tried to stay
current and aware of what the diversity team is doing.

I'm very pleased about the work being done, and was also delighted to see
that the panelists included someone with autism; any idea who that his/will
be?

Hey all! Apologies for the late follow-up. Meant to reply sooner but 
lost track of email.

Is there any kind of public planning space for the panel, maybe like an 
Etherpad? This could be useful for asynchronous planning for what we 
want to cover, having a list of attendees and/or interested people in 
participating, and creating a general flow / order for the panel. 
Setting something up like this with an initial brainstorming would 
probably be useful, and then the rest of us can add our thoughts there 
for collaboration.

I think some open-ended discussion would be helpful for determining what 
kind of solutions and problems we discuss in the panel. Something that I 
would find informative and useful as an attendee would be to hear the 
individual difficulties and hurdles that contributors have overcome to 
be involved with open source and Fedora. What did you find difficult? 
What things were helpful to you getting started? What are the three 
things that you think would be helpful to improve for someone in your 
situation? What kind of things make for a welcoming environment in a 
project and how do you feel Fedora does in meeting your qualifications 
for a welcoming environment? What is working well? What isn't?

I feel like these are good discussion primers to helping talk about some 
of the topics María mentioned. I'd be curious to know what the rest of 
you think! Hope some of this brainstorming is useful.

One thing I want to be considered is the development of semi-automated
knowledge modules for handling diversity issues for those who want to
be helped and those who want to help

Not all Fedora users have access to knowledge ... access to the
Internet does not auto-magically enable people to help themselves.
IMO it is important for software to awaken people.

What can be a good set of specs?

I would appreciate input from many locations and contexts.

This email got longer than I expected :) so first I have a few
questions;

 - For remote panelists - how will we be joining? Voice or Video? What
   format would be appropriate? I need to check to see where on the
   schedule this is, line it up to my timezone, and make sure I have
   the right hardware/software setup.


Here are a couple ideas I have for the agenda;

 - Self Intro - focusing on your perspective of diversity
     
 	For example: I contribute on the infrastructure team. My focus
 	is neuro-diversity. I have an Asperger's diagnosis as well as
 	ADHD and anxiety diagnoses. One of the big benefits of working
 	with the Fedora community is that we most often communicate
 	via email and irc. I feel very connected to the teams I
 	participate on without expending the emotional energy needed
 	in a face to face personal interaction - etc.

 - What does it mean to be a person of $(your specific interest or
   focus)? 


 - As a person of $(diversity) what challenges have you had to
   overcome, what parts have been beneficial?

	eg..With ADHD and Asperger's come the ability/disability to
	become hyper-focused on a particular topic/problem/idea which
	is really beneficial for learning new ideas and topics.

 - Something I think that we could be more open about are the things
   that people are uncomfortable asking. I'm not sure how to approach
   this though? I'm thinking particularly about stereotypes of people
   of color, non-binary gender identity, Autistic people, etc. I think
   stereotypes persist - in part - because we don't feel comfortable
   talking about such personal topics in a way that is constructive and
   instructive without feeling judged for having a particular
   perception.

 - I think the issue of outreach has to focus on our ability as a community
   to access underprivileged people. For my perspective, being someone
   with Asperger's and raising two children on the Autism Spectrum is
   expensive. I'm sure there are ways to reach out to other groups that
   may not otherwise be able to participate or access hardware to learn
   or contribute. 

   This is really back of the napkin type stuff here, but what about
   creating local hardware recycling programs or creating web-based
   desktops running Fedora? There are definitely resource constraints
   for both of those options. Perhaps we need to partner with a sponsor
   or set up an application/nomination process?

 - One other item to discuss - how do we as a community handle issues
   where we have not been open and accepting? I am in IRC quite a bit
   and on a few mailing lists and I have never seen anyone being
   obviously malicious. In fact, I have seen more long time
   contributors go out of their way to be awesome to people that don't
   seem to have that same level of etiquette. However, that doesn't mean
   that these issues don't exist. What are some positive ways that we
   as a community can support or respond to issues or concern if we are
   present for a situation like this?

Hi Marina,

Thanks for adding your name there! Unfortunately, as we somewhat 
expected, there were difficulties with setting up the panel for remote 
participation. We ended up being able to have a video chat with Tatica, 
but the organizers specifically requested us to limit the call to a 
single person to conserve bandwidth for other Flockers.

In the coming week, there should be an uploaded version of the talk to 
the Fedora YouTube channel. As soon as it's made available, we will 
definitely share it back out here. Thanks for your interest and support 
of the panel regardless!!
