I completely agree. Empathy has several design issues in GNOME 3,
mainly it's a multi-window app which is quite difficult to use in
GNOME 3. Moreover it's not actively developed any more and doesn't
keep up with new popular services (Telegram, Whatsapp,...) unlike the
good old Pidgin. I think last time I proposed removal of Empathy we
agreed on that, but the problem was that some parts of GNOME
(Contacts) depended on it. I wonder if there has been any progress in
this. We can't keep Empathy in this state forever.
Contacts does not really depend on Empathy; at least, there is no
Requires in the Fedora package.
It does use D-Bus for launching Empathy chats or calls. But this
functionality already does not work if Empathy is simply *offline*.
It's a bug that should be fixed, but removing Empathy is not going to
make this any worse.
I also agree. And if GNOME Photos is not mature enough, we could use
gthumb. It would still serve us better as the default app than
Shotwell.
Agreed, gthumb is much better than Shotwell.
I prefer Rhythmbox because it supports Internet radios, dunno
whether
it's an important use case for us. Otherwise I don't have a problem
with Music being the default app.
My $0.02: Music is much nicer if you're listening to local files, and
Fedora doesn't support that many Internet radio stations, since we
can't handle MP3. (If you can figure out how to get third-party MP3
support, you can also figure out how to install Rhythmbox). I'm not
sure if Internet radio support is planned for Music; I suspect not,
since it's focused on viewing local files.
