Having access to an Apple iMac running on OS X Yosemite, I noticed
extensions are part of System Preference. See

It will be nice to look what System Preference did well and where it
falls short.
Extensions in Yosemite don't allow changing *everything* in the shell like
GNOME-shell extensions can.
They're a collection of 7 different types of plugins:
