We often get inquiries from magazines asking for permission to bundle one
or more Fedora discs with a future issue. This is a fairly routine
process as long as the disc is an unmodified copy of Fedora media (i.e. an
official release). Some interaction with Red Hat Legal is required to
send out an agreement to the magazine.
We can speed up that interaction and the overall process if we have a page
that tells magazines what they need to provide, and to whom, for a
covermount agreement. Generally we need the following information, sent
to the ''press(a)fp.o'' address:
* The name (d/b/a) and address of the company producing the magazine
* The exact disc(s) that are to be bundled
* Contact information for the person making the request

I had suggested this earlier to Robyn -- a press blog entry for Red Hat's
PR channel (http://press.redhat.com) that would synopsize and point to our
interview on the wiki. However, Robyn's pretty busy right now. Kara
Schiltz from Red Hat's PR department is willing to publish something next
week.
I'm going to pick this up and drive it forward, my way of helping this
week on something Marketing related!

The Inquirer on Tim Burke's Keynote at LinuxCon Europe
by Karin Bakis

Oct. 28
Red Hat promotes the community at Linuxcon
LINUX DISTRIBUTOR Red Hat gave a behind the scenes look its role in the community and a look forward into the future at Linuxcon Europe.
Tim Burke, VP of Linux technology development at Red Hat, gave a keynote speech at Linuxcon in Prague this week. Overall he expressed that the Linux community is essential to the open source operating system's progress.
Burke drew a parallel with the phrase 'it takes a village to raise a child' when talking about the Linux community and the distribution. He said, "Linux is a crusade, it's not just what you're doing to get a pay cheque, or something like that, it's 'we're changing the world together'."
For example, Red Hat works with its partners and customers that include banks and military institutions to push the limits of what can be achieved. This includes scalability in file systems and wireless technologies, according to Burke. The company distributes both its free Fedora community distribution and its Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system.
Keen to promote Red Hat as a contributor, Burke showed us that the firm is the one of the top contributors in terms of adding lines of code to the Linux kernel and the Gnome project.
Importantly, Burke expressed how Red Hat doesn't see other distributions, such as Suse and Ubuntu as competition, recognising that each of them "add value to the ecosystem" and are collectively collaborators. He said that companies like Microsoft and VMware are the competition.
Looking forward, Burke set out the challenge of taking on Microsoft and VMware. Burke said, "It used to be, 'can we beat Solaris?' We don't ask those questions anymore. Now it's, 'we got that', so it's, 'can we continue to evolve into other market places, can we broadly take on Microsoft, VMware and others?' That's our real challenge."
We caught up with Tim Burke prior to his keynote so take a look at our video interview with him from Linuxcon.

Marketing meeting: Tomorrow! 2011-10-18
by Robyn Bergeron
I know it's a long time in coming, folks. I'm delighted to announce the
return of ... weekly Fedora Marketing Meetings!
Where: irc.freenode.net, in #fedora-meeting-1
When: Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 20:00 UTC (4pm US Eastern, 1pm US Pacific)
Who: You! Anyone can come - just be prepared to want to Get Things Done! :)
Agenda for tomorrow:
* A quick refresher course on what the Fedora Marketing Team does over the
course of a release
* Schedule check-in: We're approaching GA, which means we have
announcements, feature profile opportunities, and much more!
* Brainstorming: What can we do to get this group going again? Are there new
projects people are interested in?
* Your agenda item here: Feel free to pitch an agenda item!
See you tomorrow! And welcome back! :) Questions welcomed beforehand or
in-meeting, as always.
Stay beefy,
-Robyn

Love and feeding of marketing team.
by Robyn Bergeron
Helloooooooooo Marketing Fans,
So...... I will be the first to admit that I've been a little lax (okay,
actually, super-lax) in the Marketing area lately. Some of this has
just been my time, or lack thereof, especially when it comes to meetings
and having them, and some of it is simply that nobody else is really
insisting on meeting and getting things done and kicking me in the pants
about it, either. :)
In the spirit of Getting Things Done, and more generally, having a bit
more excitement around this joint, I'd like to get an idea for who's
interested in getting the Marketing Train back on the tracks and up to
speed. This means: meetings, being a bit more active in IRC, knocking
out some of the release-time items, and most importantly, thinking about
NEW THINGS we can do either around raising awareness, new things that
new contributors can do, or just generally doing new things because
doing the same stuff over and over and over is, let's face it, super boring.
In short, just two questions:
1: Who's interested in coming to marketing meetings again, and working
on release-related activities?
2: Does anyone have any new and cool ideas in the marketing area that we
can pick up and work on?
I'm here with my marketing defibrillators! Let's get it back together,
folks. I'd like to just pick up with getting back at least on the
meeting train next Tuesday, and we can adjust the time and whatnot if
necessary as we go forward.
Other thoughts or comments are welcomed. Flames too. I'm expecting those. :)
