"Two years after Java was delivered under the GPL we saw the first
release of the Sun-led OpenJDK project for a Java Development Kit built
using free and open-source code; that spawned the IcedT project lead by
Red Hat, to build an even freer OpenJDK - the OpenJDK had contained a
class-path exception to exempt from the GPL certain portions of the code
that Sun or others still owned and open sourcers couldn't touch. A
version of IcedT shipped with Fedora in 2008 that was compatible with
Sun's official spec."
"Fedora is the premiere showcase for GNOME 3, the new and somewhat
controversial version of one of the top desktops used in the Linux
community. This is a review of Fedora 16, in its 32-bit version, which
uses Gnome 3.2. I installed it from the primary Live disc image that you
are encouraged to download from the main site."
The Fedora folks want you to be successful in using Fedora. As part of
the Fedora 16 release, the project is taking the wraps off of a new
StackExchange-style site for asking questions about (what else?) Fedora.
Rahul Sundaram announced the forum on November 8th, to coincide with the
Fedora 16 official release. It's using Askbot, open source Q&A forum
software. Says Sundaram, "The goal of Ask Fedora is to be the best place
for community support in Fedora and integrate tightly with the rest of
the Fedora infrastructure."
"So, in a nut-shell Fedora 16 is 'the' best Fedora I have ever seen.
The seasoned users should be partying and they don't much care about
the issues I am facing as they rarely get out of the terminal and
solving such issues is like talking a walk in a park. As a longtime
Ubuntu user Fedora, for the first time, surprised me with its ease of
The installation and removing of applications is smooth. I have not
seen single dependency issues. Yes, it doesn't have Ubuntu Software
Center, but its install remove tool does a great job -- something on
par with Synaptic Package Manager.
So, as an Ubuntu user I am quite at home with Fedora 16. I will
recommend it to those who don't have a lot of proprietary hardware and
want to give Gnome 3 a try. Trust me, Fedora won't disappoint you.
As of now, I am loving Fedora."
