workstation marketing - hardware

Hi,

Quick question from the website dept. here -

We are thinking about having a nice high-quality photo of a laptop to 
show the workstation desktop screenshot on for the website.

Do we have any preferences as to what model laptop we might want to 
feature? If we did this, would we have to blur out / debrand the system?

Does anyone have thoughts on this kind of thing?

Back of an ASUS Zenbook with a Fedora sticker over the logo.  It's a
nice looking laptop overall and it isn't immediately recognizable as a
macbook.  I think Adam Jackson has one or I have one here.

My feeling is that ThinkPads are sort of the informal go-to Fedora 
laptop, but maybe that's just my bias/history showing.

Not sure whether that's necessary, though it's *possible* that showing a 
logo/distinctive laptop might imply to some folks there's some sort of 
sponsor/endorsement relationship where none exists.

I also agree that my first choice would be an IBM think pad but again as
jzb wrote it might make people think that there is some kind of sponsorship
there.

I think laptops such as the HP envy are quite nice as they are clean
looking and not easily recognisable.

I think that may be more historical now; I'm thinking we should pick 
hardware that appeals more to the target audience for workstation. So 
maybe some nice ultrabook? Looks like the Zenbook might fit the bill - 
it's pretty sleek and has a nice look.

OK I am showing my age, but ultrabooks do not fit my definition of
workstations. A workstation is something I am going to be sitting in front
of day in and day out 10 hours a day doing compiles and debugging. A
Zenbook is something that I wouldn't think of running anything cpu/ram
intensive on as it wouldn't have the cooling capacity to keep its brains
from frying. Or has the definition of workstation changed?

This is a totally reasonable point; I'm not sure. I know the target 
audience is developers, but don't a lot of developers use their laptop 
as the primary machine and build on resources accessible on the network 
and/or heavier stuff in a lab or at their desk?

It's the actual desktop of the developer that the workstation product is 
concerned with, right? Which would be mostly targeted at laptop? Or am I 
misunderstanding?

Right -- today's developer tends to be highly mobile and using
resources elsewhere.  Or at least that's what we're led to believe if
any tech press or slant is to be believed in The Real World.

I think the conventional use of "workstation" in the past is not
necessarily what we want to get stuck on here.  I agree that a slim
and sexy laptop fits the image we are trying to portray with Fedora
Workstation.

Actually that is the hyped up view. The majority of developers are still on
Windows XP laptops from 2003. They just don't frequent coffee shops, look
young and picturesque, or do well on GQ magazines. However because they are
on Windows XP, they probably aren't what we are going to convert in mass
droves either :).

It may be? I guess I tend to see Fedora on ThinkPads more than anything 
else, but that could be my environment.

The Zenbook is pretty. Would you edit out the ASUS logo?

Nice idea to show the screenshot of Fedora running on a laptop on the 
website!

Out of the Lenovo's, only the Yoga Pro 2 [1] looks visually appealing 
enough to make Fedora shine, with the downside that another distro 
"owns" orange (this is from a purely visual point of view, as the 
Lenovos are nice to work with, but that's another thing). Another issue 
with that is that it comes with a big windows logo on the front.

On the other hand, the blue Zenbook has the upside that it's blue, and 
that's a color that is strongly connected with Fedora [2]. I'm not sure 
if others have been referring to the more common silver model in the 
thread, but if you can get hold of the blue one, that's a big win, 
especially if the lightning makes the silver one ending up looking all 
white.

The Samsung Series 9 might also be a good pick [3]

I have the Thinkpad Yoga... very similar look (no orange, smoother

I've tried that in the past for other projects, and from my experience, 
having the actual hardware makes it feel more real.
Unless you also makes the UI in the illustration drawn as well.
Quickly looking over ubuntu.com, microsoft.com and apple.com they are 
all using shots of real hardware.

Owen Taylor has a Zenbook, which I believe I saw in a meeting we both
attended today.
