Hi all,
why doing such thing in a "second life"? Imho we should starting this ideas in our "first life" ...
Just my personal imagination :-(
Time is a important, valueable and also rarely resource (for me) and I try to be Ambassador in real life. Sometimes it works fine, otherwise not :-( But I for myself don't find the time to do as mentioned ...

Never played "Second Life"; have heard of "Sweden representing themselves diplomatically" in that virtual world.

Well, some people prefer spending their time in different ways than others. For example, most people in this list prefer contributing to Fedora by being ambassadors instead of coding. So, if one would like to contribute in his way, I'd really say "go for it!". :)
To be honest, if a Fedora kiosk/shop existed in Second Life and a wiki page with instructions on how to get there, I would probably install the game just to visit it and see what it looks like; probably meet some folks there too.
Besides, I found the idea fascinating and it would hit the news too, most probably with a good, funny way.
There are some times you use the computer just to have fun, right? :)

Each communication channel is worth considering and also worth trying, if we can reasonably expect some results from it.
Having a Fedora kiosk in Second Life sounds fun, and should not take too much resources to implement.
So Moshe, and all the ones who found his idea great--why don't you put together a list of specs the kiosk would have, the content required etc, and the exact mission the kiosk would have (basically answer the question Why should somebody come visit it?), and what resources you will need to accomplish all this? Like, if the registration will require payments to be made, how much money you will need.
With the finished plan, you can go to Famsco and ask for money if needed. You can start out a group around this, have a wiki page built, and if enough committed people will join you, then it might even grow into a standing project, like Fedora Free Media.
I am looking forward to helping you implement this. a

Second life is a commercial project (yes its software is sold freely and there is a basic subscription) but at the end if someone want to create its own identity has to pay a monthly fee.
In my opinion we have to focus on real world, and we have to focus the resource on it, after, when we have created a real community we can see at this second world. We aren't Reuters, Nike or other business and we aren't the Sweden embassy, we are Fedora Project, a 4 years old project that actually has other problem in the mind.
We need ambassador that go in LUGs, attend event's and meeting. We need people that discuss with other people directly. This, in my opinion, is the first goal.
I'm not against this proposal, but i think we have to wait the real community is growth, we need a base first, then we can add new bricks on it.

Well, yes and no.
In my opinion, it thoroughly does not matter what is being done, as long as it IS being done and IS indeed reaching the intended audience with intended message.
So far, what I have seen on this list is discussion of an idea--nothing more. The "we should" or "shouldn't" statements have brought zero results and all of us participating in this discussion so far have achieved zero results but spent time doing it.
So as much as I hate making normative statements, here's one for what it's worth--if you (and this is a generalized "you") believe something would be a good idea, then introduce it in the round and if you have enough people supporting you (not a majority, just enough to get your idea to work), and Famsco is not vetoing your project, then by Jake, go ahead and implement it.
I have seen so many discussions on this list about what Ambassadors should or should not do, should or should not discuss, on this list or on the marketing list, yet little concrete work gets done. Famsco has got the money from Red Hat that is waiting to be spent on innovative, daring, or tried-and-true activities. I have not seen many requests with concrete plans sent to Famsco. This is the first fresh idea in months and it gets shot down. Well, make a counterproposal then. And if you don't have one, try and come up with something anyway.
DVDs and schwag are nice, but we've been there already, time to move on and grow and make some new things happen. If Moshe will make this happen and it fails, it still will be better than not to try at all.

I agree in what are you saying, we need more fresh ideas. What I've said is my opinion and i think that with opinion we can growth. I'm the last here to discourage new proposal I'm trying to find some new ideas, and, for example, i propose new ones trough M-L. I think we have to discuss about this to make it better, the problem is that is not possible that, at the end, we are the same that discuss in this list.
I'm not 100% contrary and i'm not 100% in favor, i want only that people give their ideas. Only this.

Hello there, Now that everyone gave his/her opinions about this, Im just curious about - when the event will be held - where the event will be held - who will be there - who will be sending the t-shirts+dvds in time - the game's status on fedora - what ambassadors should talk - a wiki page which describes all these above - [...] more things which I'm too stupid to think of

The basic idea behind putting Fedora on the Second Life map, is to put us on a high-profile, web 2.0 phenomena.
Second life represent an emerging trend of virtual life. the technology, and the high quality of software development has eventually matured to a viable a sustaining mechanism. in the near future we will see Second life stock market. we will see major companies rushing in to the virtual world. some for the purpose of getting into new crowds, some to make real direct money out of it. we will see philanthropic movement, new political ideas, elections, and so on. the whole thing will be virtual in nature but very real to person be able to live their virtual life's. don't be surprise when currency exchange for US$-Linden$ will appears at your favorite finance forum or bank.
I've played with second life a bit and heard of real financial success out of it. people actually make money from sending the well earned Linden dollars into their real one.
then it came to me, why not put a stand, a kiosk, a place to hangout to meet people, to reach out, to be able even to support globally in Fedora? it will make real Headlines. for every company that joins in, there are still headline. very soon there would be none because it would be normal. as you all know if u have a good idea, better be the first to conquer as much crowd as possible and market share. the same thing applies for us being in second life. we are putting a lot of effort to bring Fedora to as much crowd as possible. since second life is a new frontier, that what brought me to offer second life presence.
my current laptop can't support running second life (IBM x31). i played it at work (AMD Athlon 3500+, 64bit, ATI x300), but it's jerky and flash's (i thing because of compiz).
the basic proposition is for someone that have the spare time, and willing to put some kind of an establishment (an island) at second life. a wiki (good idea) at fedoraproject.org will give info, the place will have information about Fedora a combination of the Major site, announce list, DVD selling (people will pay linden dollars and will get Fedora DVD delivered to their door), a chat place, a bugzilla stand for fresh bugs (or known issues), GPG keys replacements, and as many as one be creative enough to be.
of course, this guy will be an official ambassador for second life sphere.
i don't have the hardware for this, so this call is for anyone who can do this and have the hardware juice for it.
Happy to be at your service,
Moshe.

Try to ask on other mailing lists/forums. With luck we can find someone (a fedora user at least) to push it.
Definitely, this idea needs a leader, if not there won't be any long term progress. I think Moshe, you should lead this little project and report back your progress on this mailing list or during meetings. Having you as a leader, we will still have the control on the way one spread the fedora's word in such a way not to tarnish the whole project.

If you want to join this project you have to do a plan with costs, goals, etc.... and send it to FAMSCO that will decide to support or not.
As i know you are the first that accept this one, so, if you want to take the responsibility to lead and manage it, you are welcomed.

Hi Anand,
i am too busy working with SL, especially where my laptop can't support this, and at work, you know, i can't play with this at all. open an embassy their, a wiki at fedora site, sell DVD and fedora t-shirts.
and of course report back so we can all come and visit fedora "island" .
good luck, Moshe.

We don't have an island yet, due to the fact it is around $2000. I've put in a request to FAMSCO to get money to open a store type thing in a popular center of SL. More info coming soon!
