registering your nick to get into #fedora

I know this is an old discussion, but I have a new example.

At OLF Ben was helping this guy install F13 on this old laptop, so while
it was installing he set up a vm on his macbook and was playing around
with it. As we got to talking I mentioned that he could get help on IRC
and he wanted some help setting that up. Here is where the problem
starts.

I was showing him how to do IRC with irssi, its the only client I really
know how to use well enough to show anyone (I tried xchat but couldnt
remember where everything was) and I think this was just way too much
for him. He was following along perfectly until we had to start the nick
registration. 

I don't know if this story is going to change any policy or anyone's
mind on the matter, but I really wish we would change this policy to
make it easier on new (even brand new) users and on ambassadors.

I find it interesting that you find xchat hard to use and irssi easy,
however I think it's fairly simple to register a nickname in freenode (and,
I'm assuming, in other IRC servers) since the registration process, as far
as I know, works the same whether you're in xchat or irssi.

After connecting to freenode -- /connect irc.freenode.net -- using the
nickname you would like to register, type

/msg nickserv register $YOUR_PASSWORD $YOUR_EMAIL

(where $YOUR_PASSWORD is the password you create and $YOUR_EMAIL is, well,
your e-mail address)

And essentially, that's it.

I think if you go to /msg nickserv help register you can get more
information.

I think there's a good reason that #fedora requires a registered nick to
enter and since the registration process is not exactly difficult, and I
don't think we should change this policy.

I know how to do it but that step caused the person I was showing to
gloss over. He was ok until that happened. I (still) think it is a
barrier to entry for (extremely) new people to GNU/Linux and Fedora.

And how, exactly, is the painfully simple act of registering an IRC
nickname, taking all of a grand total of 30 seconds (if you type slowly) as
described in a prior e-mail, a barrier?

Get real, Justin. This is no more a barrier than signing the FAS; in fact,
it's probably less of one.

Further, there's a reason that unregistered nicks do not get into #fedora,
but I don't know what it is exactly. Does anyone have any background on
this?

The reason a lot of channels started the registration barrier is to stop the
number of spambots that suddenly arose on Freenode. Registered spam bots are
easier to mute or ban :)

I'm not sure if spam is still an issue in Freenode, I haven't seen one in
months.

Also, Freenode's registration process has nothing to do with the Fedora 
project, Red Hat or any other FOSS project on freenode. It is up to the 
freenode board. Further, I think the registration process keeps a lot of 
issues at bay, so as the requirement in the Fedora Project channels, to 
be registered.

I have a suggestion to make though. If you believe it is hard for users 
to join/register for freenode, why don't you make a few new wiki pages, 
with GUI screen shots, to help new users ? IMHO that would be a better 
approach to take, we could then link them from the get-help pages.

We tried running the #fedora channel without registration for about a year.

in a nutshell, We had so many spambots that we had to close the channel 
again.

It actually contains a text paragraph on how to connect to IRC, but
really that ought to be a link out to a wiki page that people can
maintain more easily.  That wiki page is probably here:
  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/IRCHowTo

It could use some updating, and it should stay oriented on a GUI
program, which tends to be easier for new users.  I like irssi too but
I wouldn't send a first-timer to it.

So the steps to fix this issue would be:

* Update the wiki page
* Ask the websites team if they'll accept a patch for that section on
  the get-help page, and why
* Use the instructions here to send a correction to the websites team:
  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_fix_bugs_on_the_Fedora_Project_website

Amen to that. I just started using irssi after years with xchat and I don't
completely have my proverbial sea legs. In fact, new users should be
encouraged to use a GUI-based program for IRC.

Unfortunately, we lose easy
translations if we link out to the wiki with
instructions like these.

For what it's worth, I think requiring registration to enter #fedora is
a pretty big barrier for new users - for example, try finding an
official-looking Chinese language document that shows you how to
register on Freenode (this is assuming that the person actually figures
out that they need to register with Freenode).

Unfortunately, spam was apparently a big issue back with #fedora was
open to unregistered users.  I wonder if this can be reevaluated at any
point in the future though...

Er, reading this again, I just
realized that a Chinese person would
probably want (the non-registration-requiring) #fedora-zh anyway :-)

The point is that it's easy for somebody already looking for support in
the first place to get frustrated when they have to jump through another
hoop to get there.

Then again, I guess the situation might not be as bad as I think, since
unregistered people get bumped to #fedora-unregistered, where people can
walk them through the steps of applying.  Not sure what kind of data
there is on the effect of requiring registration.

Possibly, but I'd be willing to bet that new Fedora users -- if this is
indeed their first crack at Linux (and I bet that, in most cases, it's not)
-- are not going to go first to the IRC channel. Heck, =I= rarely go to
#fedora for answers, choosing first to Google for the answer (that doesn't
include forays into #fedora-kde to ask the "kde noob question of the day")
which often leads to the Fedora Forum, linuxquestions.org or some other
source of answers. If I don't find it there, then it's off to #fedora.

Also, let's not fall into the trap that new users are morons. They were
smart enough to decide to try Fedora. If they have more than two IQ points
to rub together, I think they can manage to either use the method above to
find answers or, in being introduced to IRC with the intention of using it,
register a nick on freenode in order to ask a question (or questions) on
#fedora.

Bear in mind, too, that a nick registration has its benefits for someone who
plans to use IRC on a regular (or semi-regular) basis, one of which is to
keep your nick yours, if that matters to you (as it does to me). Also,
GUI-based programs like xchat allow you to set it automatically to run the
/msg nickserv identify $PASSWORD on startup (as well as signing you in to
whatever channels you designate -- pretty handy I'd say).

So I'm still not sold on the argument that this is a hurdle for new users
and I think if there's a problem with bots in #fedora, it should remain open
to those who have a registered nick.

what I have done to help fix this issue (since I brought it up again),

Justin, I tried the "/ignore fedbot" command, but I get an "Unknown
command." error and I am also sitting in the #fedora-unregistered IRC, too.

The point is that it's easy for somebody already looking for support in

knowing the ops and what they have to deal with, the registration process is
mainly for managing the channel from spambots and the like.  i'm certain if
there was another well-functioning way to ward them off that they would go
that route.  it is designed to make the whole support experience better in
the long run, even for the n00bz who end up in there.

anyone who thinks registration should be removed needs should be willing to
commit to a few hours each day being an op in the channel.  that job is not
as easy without that spambot safeguard.
