APAC ambassadors meeting. Do we really need them?

Hi all,

This is very disheartening to see that most people of APAC region care
very little about communicating.

Yesterday's meeting was attended by 5-6 people only, though it was
announced 3 weeks ago. No one even objected about the day and timing.

So it is very obvious that either they had more important task or they
don't feel the necessity to communicate.

We have more than 70 Ambassadors from India alone. And only two were present.

Sorry to say this, but we are making *absolutely* no progress. We have
no event, we can not fulfil free media requests, no new mirror, no new
agenda, neither do we care for communicating about ideas.

Do you think a community or project can progress this way?

I have some new ideas about Fedora Free Media program, I wanted to tell this
on yesterday´s meeting. I was present there also, before the time. But due
to my network problem, after a while, I was disconnected from internet. My
nick was SuLphEr.

Yeah i understand how it feels and its a mistake that people didnt
attend and i was also in that list. i was not able to attend due to
power cut problems in my area and though there could be reasons for
people, at the end of the day we didnt attend and its a mistake.

I had some ideas and i was talking to Siddharth yesterday coz i
recieved some media requests and sent them replies in that regard too.
On the same front i had some ideas which i wanted to share but
unfortunately couldnt.

Yeah i feel this shouldnt continue and lets learn from this and start
attending the meetings from now on. Lets discuss on how to move
forward. I am sorry that i couldnt make it up yeterday.

To answer the question -- yes. I believe we need them (the APAC ambassadors
meeting).

While it's really unfortunate that most of the ambassadors was not able to
show up for some reason or the other (me included), we should keep the
faith. As Max has already pointed out, leadership is the key.

Is there any log of the previous meeting? I plan to make up with you guys.

is bad for me
but I did try to make it this time, but was not able to.

In any case, I will like to perhaps call for another session really
soon - like this
Thursday, June 12th at the same times as was proposed for this past Sunday.

We have plenty to do and when we have a good few meetings done, we can see
the momentum pick up.

might be working at office and they wouldnt have the access to get
into the channels  using IRC Clients. Weekends are generally

The reality of these meetings is that we can do best efforts to bring in the
most amount of participants.

Can I ask how has the participation on the chats been previously?  I have
not looked at the logs yet.

In general, I should be able to get online anywhere - I just need to get an
IRC client for my cell phone - any suggestions? I have a Nokia e51.

I understand that the previous meeting has not been good and the other
meetings i am sorry i am not aware of coz i was not part of fedora at
that point of time :).

Even if a person has got all he wants say ( a cell phone with all
things) can this be done from office during working hours ? i am sure
lot of  people work for companies and i guess it would be a problem. I
feel it will be a problem for me atleast. How about this Sunday at 4
PM? If this is fine with everyone ? We could go ahead. Count me

Might be some people just ignoring the fedora list, but attending is
required but it is not implies that Ambassadors are sleeping.
As I know there are good community members from your country (India).
Specially Rahul Sundharam  [1] giving good a contribution.
Hope you met him at FOSS.IN 2007 :)
and the Punjabi Community too. Amanpreet Singh [2] and Jassy Phulewala [3].
both of them working for spreding FC on Grate Panjab part from their usual
Fedora contribution.

I think this is good time to motivate all the Ambassadors .
Good leaders have a talent of getting the support from ANY_BODY  ;-)

Let's just recognize that we need to chat and let's move on.  A lot of
people have done stuff and we are all thankful for that.

What I would like to see the collective us to achieve is:
a) list out a set of action items in our respective geographies that
promote Fedora and Open Source in general
b) Take ownership and responsibilities of whatever we sign up for.

Shall we just move on and plan for the next chat?  Let's see if it makes sense
for us to have both weekday and weekend chats?

Our challenge here in APAC is that we have 6 time zones to cater to -
from Pakistan to NZ.  Unlike the US or EMEA, we have a bigger challenge.
We also have to work within the connectivity challenge as well.

Pretty unfortunate that i missed it .Thanks to my exam .and I am
extremly sorry for that because wanted to make it anyway .

I dont think another IRC meet will have any change but cant we have
any sort of discussions in mailing lists or anything like that where
people can put in their suggestions any time when they become online .
Just a thought .

Let's please use GMT/UTC timings.  I think you are suggesting 0330 GMT.

This makes it between India 9am to NZ 3:30 pm.  Should allow for a fairly
good amount of folks to participate.

a) India is GMT+5.5; Pakistan is GMT+6 (according to timeanddate.com)
b) NZ is GMT+12

My apologies... :-( I was busy with my post marriage activities. Never knew
I would become too much busy with all those rituals, or I wouldn't had
promised to attend the meeting. I'm afraid I have to accompany my wife in
